I was dangerously* literal-minded as a kid, and my mom was a fan of "Dark Shadows." I was not allowed in the room with the TV (becuz scary show) but I could HEAR just fine, and for a shockingly long time I did not, at a deep level, understand that vampires were not real.

Hi #LGBTQWriteAThon 4! I don’t have the word “foreboding” in my draft, but I have some instances of it! Here’s the first moment, Danny, one my narrators, notices something amiss. (He has no idea what he’s in for.)
In this passage from early in the draft of Reunion Tour, Danny, a bass player for hire, is auditioning to tour with a band he’s loved since he was a kid. Nicola, a former bandmate and romantic partner, has already been hired as the drummer. Sanders and Pearle are the rhythm guitarist and keyboard player; Scyther is the lead guitar player (and also? really kind of a jerk).
There were two tricks to “Seventh Step”: It had a weird tuning, and the guitar and keyboard parts didn’t rock. Sanders played choppy, open-string staccato furnace-blasts of sound, Scyther’s fingers crawled over the fretboard, every note out of tune in a way that was somehow perfect, and Pearle’s drone hung over it all like some funereal cloak.
Nicola and I had to fit a groove to it. I tried to bring just a touch of caveman swagger. She went wild on the floor tom. It felt so fucking good to play with her again, if only for a tour, or even just these two songs.
After the first pass through the chorus part, Scyther looped the verse part with a digital delay,  then took off on a wild, swirling solo. And then things got weird.
The lights didn’t flicker or dim as Scyther soloed, but the room felt less bright. The air seemed to thicken. There were flickers of motion high in my peripheral vision, like a phalanx of swallows was swooping around the room. When I turned to look, they receded.
Scyther’s lips were pulled back in a sort of manic grin. Nicola grabbed a pair of mallets and abandoned the cymbals and snare for a loping beat defined only by the kick, the floor, and the larger of her rack toms. I let the bone-rattling low C-sharp ring out through entire measures, making more space for Scyther’s spider skitter tones.
It was no-shit eerie, and it was a relief when Scyther stomped on his delay to cut it off, and we all careened together out of the solo break and into the song’s coda.
The hazy sensation was dispelled immediately, and the flutters at the edge of my vision lifted.

#BacklistSaturday My sapphic leprechaun/human romance never got enough love. It's got a literature professor falling in love with a bartender who happens to be a lep. It's one of my favorite tropes: one night stand turns into a relationship. Details and purchase links here:

Book Two of "Monstrous Rochester" One night stands never lead to actual relationships. That’s just an urban relationship myth, right? Except myths ...

Hi #LGBTQWriteAThon day 2! I'm revising the book currently called "Reunion Tour." It's a contemporary second-chance romance with a dash of cosmic horror, featuring two musicians/exes hired for a tour with a band they both love... and encountering some creepy goings-on in addition to their own mess.

Absolutely top-tier. The way Jackie interleaves characters and events across these novellas is nothing short of stunning. Possibly my favorite "oh no, snowed in!" scene EVER and also possibly my favorite multi-generation family in contemporary romance.

Let's fix that. The first three are an omnibus now, so it's easy to get started without feeling like an ATM. The Waverly Jones books are delightful. Our times aware, ACAB, character forward mysteries for the angry. If you yearn for justice but you live in the bad timeline, these are for you.

So you know previous waves of technological fabulism the tech companies threw a little loose change at social behavioral research and user interface experience. whats interesting about AI interesting is that they aren’t even pretending to care about how people use the technology.

I love this book, but it’s hard to cram into a capsule description. It’s rich and immersive (I found in-world script and gossip rag excerpts delightful). It’s both rough and tender, with some heavy themes, but full of love and hope. And a v good cat, & a side romance I almost wish had its own book.

Happy Bi Visibility Day! Have some of my OCs -- all the monsters in my historical AU Regency universe are bisexual. I got tired of including one lone bi character in human stories for personal rep and so pivoted to a fantasy universe where bisexuality is normalized and present. #BiVisibilityDay
A wheel of illustrations of bisexual original characters from my historical monster universe for Bi Visibility Day 2026. Shown: orcs, goblins, a troll, a harpy, a griffin, and a centaur. All drawn by sharksketchbook from original as-yet-unpublished works by author Kate Lavish.

My radical-ish take: No election results should be released until a winner is determined. A whole lot of the material for election-conspiracy theories come from the totally meaningless but emotionally compelling ebbs & flows of vote counting. The winner won when the polls closed.

Effective Altruism has a fatal flaw, and it's not hard to spot. The EA argument is that you should be evil (ruthlessly acquire and hold resources) now to increase capacity to do good later ("preserve the light of human consciousness"). but! there is no off-ramp! millions of years from now...

there are a few big things linking trans people and immigrants right now: - restriction of movement - access to id documentation - constantly at the center of the right-wing outrage cycle, therefore increased surveillance/possibility of violence - access to medical care - employment precarity
