Summer Brennan @summerbrennan.bsky.social · 08/07/2026This got a big reaction. Listen, I am not willing to stop using em dashes or correct grammar or even, yes, occasionally, to say that something was not X, it was Y. 0314
Summer Brennan @summerbrennan.bsky.social · 05/07/2026I think AI writing is detectable by PEOPLE, but that one should be skeptical of AI claiming to be able to detect itself. 1102
Summer Brennan @summerbrennan.bsky.social · 05/07/2026The passage I uploaded was not heavy on em dashes or any of the surface tells. It was pretty idiosyncratic. I don't write like an AI or even in a generic way. I think it might just be a scam. 270
Summer Brennan @summerbrennan.bsky.social · 05/07/2026Yes I think it is plus what I said in my quote tweet. Can a sentence pass? Sure. A paragraph? Maybe, it depends. Longer than that and you're in much more obvious territory. 070
Summer Brennan @summerbrennan.bsky.social · 05/07/2026Lack of thought and logic behind imagery and sentences. Too much repetition of certain syntax. Human writing comes from the body, mimics speech and breath; the shape & length of arguments match human thought. AI has no body, no breath, no thought, and does things that run counter to bodily writing. 2295
Summer Brennan @summerbrennan.bsky.social · 05/07/2026AI tells tend to be more invisible to other AI rather than to humans because it's the same blind spot. People seem to have this fantasy that AI somehow thinks and reads us, but it does not. It can do complex tasks but often fails at basic reading comprehension that would be easy for a 10-year-old. 070
Summer Brennan @summerbrennan.bsky.social · 05/07/2026Yeah, or pay an observant reader who is trained in, I don't know, literature, language, etc. Heaven forbid. 060
Summer Brennan @summerbrennan.bsky.social · 05/07/2026It was a short passage, but I guess apparently. Ugh. 040

Summer Brennan @summerbrennan.bsky.social · 05/07/2026I had not thought of the more vulnerable writer who is afraid their human writing could be mistaken for AI and thus PAY an AI to "humanize" their human writing...thus, ironically, rendering it tainted by AI after all. (I would basically challenge anyone to a dual who suggested my writing was AI.) 1196
Summer Brennan @summerbrennan.bsky.social · 05/07/2026Yes. Not to be weird but I was shortlisted for a book prize. I've won awards. I can write? 0100
Summer Brennan @summerbrennan.bsky.social · 05/07/2026I do think AI writing has tells. I will be reading something and then suddenly smell it, and then closer parsing shows there isn't human thought behind the words. I do not think AI can produce text of any length that can pass for human to an observant reader. 141413
Summer Brennan @summerbrennan.bsky.social · 05/07/2026I think the best AI detectors are PEOPLE, who can tell that something is not right, that there is no THERE there. 1415
Summer Brennan @summerbrennan.bsky.social · 05/07/2026I suppose the function of this is to get money out of people who are trying to pass AI writing off as human-written, so, morally I guess this might even out? 853919
Summer Brennan @summerbrennan.bsky.social · 05/07/2026I ran an absolutely 100% human, zero AI-involvement at any stage passage of my writing through an "AI detector," curious if it could really tell human from AI work, and it said my own writing was "84% AI written" then asked I wanted to pay to have it "humanized." So there's that to keep in mind. 10654031526
