In an educational setting it's not meaningfully different from the students who furtively erase their Schenker graphs and replace them with *my* Schenker graphs while we discuss them in class before turning in homework. I don't need to know what I already think! I need to know what you understand!

Wow, that's really something (and I can't improve on the adjectives with which Phil describes it). I will say that the roughly 50% of the document that focuses on music theory specifically does not appear overly burdened by familiarity with that particular subfield of "Music Studies."

this is a good parallel to what happens when someone realizes that a particular area of debate in philosophy has a lot of confusion/talking past each other, and decides to clear things up

xkcd comic "standards" that shows how attempts to fix ad hoc standards just leads to proliferation of standards: https://xkcd.com/927/

its probably the case that people falling into a few select tendencies with approaching the world isn't so much because of a lack of skeptical thinking as much is it is that there's really only a few ways to approach the world that don't end you in an asylum

I def don't have all the answers as to why there is such a persistent crisis/lull cycle in US orchestras, but one thing I do know from my 25 years at the high end of that business is that WAY too many execs and board leaders are convinced there is a magic sustainability formula hiding somewhere.

Chicago Bears’ punishing final drive symbolizes the grit of Ben Johnson’s team (Gift Article)

With 232 rushing yards and a dominant edge in time of possession, the Bears are doing more than surviving without Caleb Williams.

Per Bears PR, D'Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai are the first teammates in team history each with 300+ rushing yards through the first four weeks in the season. They're the first duo since Walter Payton/Roland Harper in 1978 to each have 200+ rush yards in the first four games.
