I don't think that is an "easy answer" - it it too simplistic there are bigger questions - 1 e..g social care is currently based on eligibility criteria with high thresholds and so heavily rationed and limited to people with high levels of need. Very different from universal NHS

Yes brilliant. And seems that no government will find a way out of the mess if journalists suffocate policy options at birth with headlines in scare quotes. The options have to be given political breathing room. It’s immature & irresponsible. Today it was The Times but they all bloody do it

I have no expertise in social care funding but I have joined battle with the system on behalf of someone I love & I despair at a press corps determined to suffocate the debate by making option generation & appraisal politically impossible. Yes you Times journalists with your ‘death tax’ headlines

I invite you to try and get this entitlement. Councils are so strapped they avoid paying for residential care. My mum (advancing dementia) plainly wasn’t safe living alone. Offered us an extra visit by the carers she was already hounding out of the flat. The system is designed to wait for disaster

Kafkaesque does not begin to describe it. People who have not done battle can have no idea. I have worked in and around the NHS for much of my career. I had no idea. I do hope you found some help for your mum. Solidarity is all I can say.

I would add - also had ‘mum’ skin in this game - in order to be eligible for any of these ‘schemes’ someone has to have the time/emotional resilience to make sense of the rules/fill in forms/chase decisions for years to get ‘help’ of unreliable quality that is often tangentially connected to need

If there is a ‘debate’ can we avoid the abstraction. Stop presenting it as a Gordian knot of incomprehensible & unsustainable costs. Instead storytelling about what this actually looks like for families. A complete lottery of astronomical cost for unreliable quality and it could be coming to you.

Everyone on X and elsewhere who called for a violent response should be charged with incitement. Everyone involved in the pogrom should be locked up with exemplary sentences. Govt should make it clear that will be the response in future anywhere else. Enough.

Often struck by how voters seem knowingly to accommodate plainly incoherent, scarcely credible promises of what politicians will ‘do’ from those who (for good or ill) present a believable way of ‘being’ as a leader. Is the problem less about seeming polished and more about seeming shape shifting?
