A photo of a juvenile Cooper's hawk (Astur cooperii) perched on the flat top of a cut off tree stump, its wings held partially out, tail up, and feathers floofed out while it gazes upward with its beak slightly open. It's a medium-sized hawk with a dark brown upper body, streaky brown and tan breast & belly, striped tail, smalled hooked beak, and pale irises. The background is a blurred shady forest setting.

#ResistanceRoots Today in history, 1897: Sheriff’s deputies open fire on a peaceful march of unarmed striking coal miners, killing 19 and wounding dozens more. Many were shot in the back. Most of the workers were immigrants, murdered for daring to protest long hours and economic exploitation. /1
Illustration from Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper depicting sheriff’s deputies preparing to fire at striking miners. The Lattimer Massacre remains one of the darkest chapters in American labor history, defining the brutal extremes of industrial capitalism. The event was defined by unchecked corporate violence self-justified through anti-immigrant prejudice. Perhaps the most tragic element of Lattimer is the collective amnesia that followed. The coal barons kept the Lattimer Massacre out of the history books, but they did not crush the workers. In the immediate aftermath, more than 10,000 immigrant miners flooded into the United Mine Workers of America. They created a unified, multi-ethnic labor force that would soon shift the balance of power between corporations and the working class. Image credit: Library of Congress.

The most absolutely massive flex from the state fair exhibit. This quilt is made of 40 years of prize ribbons from various categories at the New Mexico State Fair won by Carol St. Clair Johnson. She also won a prize for this quilt.

satin ribbons

After unexpectedly winning her first blue ribbon for a sewn cape in 1981, Carol St. Clair Johnson developed an enduring love for the New Mexico State Fair. The quilt Fair New Mexico-41 Fair Years incorporates more than six hundred of the ribbons she won at the fair every subsequent year except 2020 (when the fair was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic). Johnson earned ribbons for needlework, knitting, crochet, pies, cookies, cakes, canning, jewelry, flowers, vegetables, and potted plants. The title of the quilt is a reference to the state song, and the design places the state's Zia sun symbol at the center. The quilt earned Johnson yet another ribbon: Best in Category (miscellaneous quilt) at the 2023 New Mexico State Fair.

On Saturday, Aug 15, I'm giving a keynote at the Southeast Arizona Bird Festival. There are still a few spots, so sign up and come say hi! Here's a comic with the festival's signature bird, the Vermilion Flycatcher. tucsonbirds.org/festival/fes...
A comic with two panels. In panel 1, labeled "when you remember to bring your camera," there's a quiet scene looking across a marsh, with a single osprey on a branch, largely obscured by branches. In panel 2, labeled "when you forget to bring your camera," the marsh scene is full of critters, including a whooping crane, vermilion flycatcher, American flamingo, Atlantic puffin, painted bunting, resplendent quetzal, Steller's sea eagle, two moose, king eider, Kirtland's warbler, Brewster's warbler, a few rare butterflies, flocks of flying birds, many beautiful flowers, and the osprey now unobstructed by twigs.

Among other things, Wormless People featured an unnamed character I dubbed "Inexplicably Tall Legs Guy" whose proportions were otherwise normal but whose legs were nine feet long. He had nothing to do with the plot, but hung out in a hotel where people occasionally walked between his legs.

Can't get numb to this: The United States is stuck in a war it started, cannot end, and may further escalate to no avail, having dismantled its diplomatic apparatus, depleted its military stockpile, and destroyed its credibility. A historic strategic mistake harming millions in many different ways.

A small scarab soaked in waterfall mist. The metallic green on the beetle is not pigment, but structural color (a result of micro-structures that reflect only certain wavelengths). If you look closely within the droplets, the green is refracted into other hues. (Dichelonyx sp.; Montana) #Bugsky 🌿🐙📷
A macro photo, side view, of a green beetle with orange legs and a dark thorax and head. The beetle is covered in drops of water of all different sizes (from a waterfall nearby). The beetle is clinging to a wet rock covered in pale yellowish-green lichen. The water droplets act like little prisms, refracting the light into highlights of purple and blue on the beetle's green back.
