The Nu Review mourns the loss of contributor Rachel Blau DuPlessis (1941-2026). Her poems “You” and “Manna Stories” appeared in Volume One Issue Seven. Baruch Dayan Ha’emet.
You
1. The finger, leaking blood
Is licked and swallowed back
Into the mammal of Me, not You.
Mouths and songs, and
It's like squinting
Into, living in, the moments Of nebula. Or folding and wobbling Quietly, where the tremendous Ur-dots entered
Not majesty, not over-view But dot to dot, and mite to mite And making troubles with their Shocking songs, blasts and blows.
And we can't explain it, what we do.
The excuse is, were just learning The "language" to talk of What we try and think we know.
But don't know who To be human are.
We bomb children under bridges.
We gun them in classrooms.
We starve them encircled by fencing.
Is this the we
That we must accede to?
Thus how to recite any ritual
Without revulsion is the question.
Then always someone is pointing and intoning
"Those are the enemy; destroy their trees and shrines!" Replying, "Huh! you're kidding"
Is apparently not
An adequate rejoinder.2. And then You is You.
Here or not, hosting there-fore And where-fore.
We are Us, and crosswise hope That we can cope with a Residual You, the stupid You, and Survive "all this."
I think were expected to glorify You With praise.
Us? Why us?
Weve barely got resigned To our evident fungibility.
And You! I mean, aren't You
"a wind that passes and does not come again," And whatever could we know about that?
But suppose the You is posited
As agreed upon beginning:
Like those hills from whence We stumbled, embittered,
Into the shadow realm of despair,
At sickening water from denatured skies, and strange dust across denuded lands, While the wealthiest finger Money Wads In their purse-hoard, and assume Their CreditRachel Blau DuPlessis •
Manna Stories
1.
Called Floating Wefts-this weaving with a thread angled through differently
(crosswise) (lemon color of delight) (readiness).
This touch of resistance crosses against the looms and toils of necessity.
Another pleasure, like the bread of angels!
And we have eaten the bread of angels gathered as it falls, gently, in quiet clumps.
Blazing like sunsets, but edible.
Save extras for later. Or tomorrow.
That's for, in case it forgets. It might forget us.
So we shouldn't depend on ourselves. Yes? No?2.
Floating Wefts release a yellow thread running sideways
across the gridded ladder of the pattern.
It's an aslant direction.
For us, the bread of angels!
It fell to us. For this,
grateful. We had been hungry, wandering, and endlessly stuck,
Swamp then desert. Not much of a choice.
So we folded the extras in our napkins.
Taking leftovers is all.
We do give thanks for the petit pains already fallen.
They are good, honey-flavored, trace of coriander. A bit unvaried, but no complaints.
Yet even when it falls, we worry.
We watch for tomorrow.
Will it, wont it, all about it.
Tcha tcha, tcha, gossip the stories.
Is it really forbidden to save some? Any?
One piece? Just two, maybe?
Even though we have also gorged on quail?

Just published: "The Broken Heart is the Master Key," the new poetry collection from Baruch November (@bnovember). Introduction by Alicia Ostriker. Available direct from Ben Yehuda Press and the usual places.
“God works through the fires in the collection, inviting us to reflect on our own spiritual journeys… these poems … are courageous and vulnerable, unlocking painful and uplifting truths.”
—Jewish Book CouncilThe broken heart is the master key,
said the Baal Shem Tov.

Despair is the loudest language
in all worlds.

Ask the mother of the stolen seven-year-old girl.
Ask the widowed wives still in love.
Ask the newly dead as they look down.
Ask the soldier missing both arms.

The broken heart is the master key,
said the Chassidic master
to the shofar blower who lost
his page of mystical notations
& thought he had failed his task—

having blasted notes
like a simple,
broken man.
I have been an inept architect.
I built for one who does not live
with the truth of others.
I built for starlight,
not shelter.
—Baruch November

text from Labzik--there is a huge illuminated letter nun נ and a dog is sitting on top of it as if he was a person, and next to that is a letter vav ו, so it just spells the yiddish word NU (basically "well? so?")

Joanna Fuhrman in the latest @thenureview.bsky.social I think it's the best so far, #3. And Fuhrman's piece is wonderful.
When I looked messy, my mother used to say I looked "like a gelcha." I always assumed gelcha was a Yiddish word, but years later I learned that Gelcha was the name of a schlubby guy who lived in my great-great-grandmother's village.

If you're in NYC on 12/10, check out this screening of the documentary BURNING OFF THE PAGE about the life and work of American Yiddish poet Celia Dropkin (1887-1956.) The film "celebrates her unabashed writing about the female body and sexual liberation." yivo.org/Burning-Off...
Burning Off the Page includes powerful dramatic readings, archival footage, historic recordings, and dazzling animations to bring Dropkin’s pioneering poems to life. Along with her descendants, filmmaker Eli Gorn interviews stars of the Jewish artistic world including writers, Yiddish translators, and musicians.

Join YIVO for the New York premiere of this documentary followed by a discussion with Gorn, professor Agnieszka Legutko and poet Edward Hirsch.

Yehoshua November
CONTEMPORARY POETS, by Yehoshua November

Has there ever been a group of agnostics so intent
upon meaning
in every car door shutting
in the cold, each turn
of a leaf as it descends?
Do they believe
more than us, dozing off
in the back of the synagogue?
