The archetypal experience of a potential Manics enjoyer encountering them for the first time is generally "that's quite pleasant, wonder what he's on about"

Stu West @stuwest.com · 28/09/2026
Not meant as a takedown of the Manics, which is a band I quite enjoy in places, but they don't have any undeniable bangers like Panic or This Charming Man or Bigmouth Strikes again, or even tracks like Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now where the lyrics and vocal delivery give you everything you need

Saw someone on here say there's no UK band with a big fanbase that has as little US cultural footprint as the Manic Street Preachers and after thinking about it my explanation is they're sort of like "what if The Smiths but you had to do homework before you could enjoy them"

Very anxious about posting this, but I feel strongly compelled to share. I know it’s a lot to take in for a Saturday morning and I appreciate anyone for taking the time to read it.

tbh I went to Disneyland last month and there was the shuttle bus to the park, Space Mountain, the Indiana Jones ride, Star Tours, every bathroom visit.. no shortage of times I was indoors and surrounded by people

James is underrated, I think because he was too fond of the drink and spent his last decade farming out his script assignments to his students

I don’t know if you recognise the guy playing Friar Tuck but he was a famous UK tv comedy guy best known for tongue-twisting wordplay and puns, very strange to see him acting with Sean Connery

They’re obviously playing the long game by making the character into Tom King, guaranteeing that Tom King won’t be able to resist writing them a 12-issue Miracleman maxi-series whenever he’s out of contract with DC
David Colton was born a frail, asthmatic and short kid. After he witnessed the September 11th attack, David went enlist to the Army. Constantly bullied by the other recruits, his fate changed after a brutal beating by his sergeant, he was chosen to undergo the Super-Soldier Serum process.[4] New and fresh, Colton was dubbed "Captain America" and was deployed to both Afghanistan[3] and Iraq,[5] marking the beginning of his descent into cynicism.

I think the Hitchhikers books have a very dry humour, and whenever I look at things that are supposedly inspired by it they almost never do

I feel like I can criticise criticise these books from a place of great familiarity and affection. On the other hand, according to wikipedia there’s also a sixth book in the series not written by Adams and I’m not going to bother having an opinion about that

Book 5: An extremely sour and unpleasant book. I read it many times on its original release, partly because I’d spent a lot of pocket money to buy the hardcover and partly because at that age I also tended to pick at scabs

Book 4: Quite an interesting novel about Arthur Dent having a mid-life crisis. As an ostensible sf comedy, very confusing to me when I read it aged 12

Stu West @stuwest.com · 15/09/2026
Book 3: Includes some great bits. The part about Arthur Dent’s nemesis being foiled from killing him by a time paradox is very good. Sadly, the main plot is about cricket-playing aliens and had been rejected from Doctor Who due to the combination of cricket and science fiction being inadvisable

Books 1 and 2: The HHGttG series starts with an excellent novel. Unfortunately, because Douglas Adams ran up against a deadline, it was split in half and published as two ~200 page volumes

Stu West @stuwest.com · 15/09/2026
At school, my best friend and I used to have entire conversations by exchanging Hitchhikers quotes. It wasn’t obvious to us that only half of the five books were good, partly because there were only four books at that time

Some discussion lately about how The Kids are not into Douglas Adams. As a massive Douglas Adams fan I want to suggest it’s because his best-known series is five books long, they tend to be sold in an omnibus or a boxed set, and only about half of them are good

I assume that’s political framing to prevent pro-Brexit politicians (Reform, current Tories, etc) from claiming the government has ceded sovereignty to an external court

What if the AI boom is a bubble but doesn’t cause a recession when it ends? Nathan Tankus compared it to the fracking boom
What it can do, and is already doing, is causing significant damage to the physical and social environment near these data centers. The proper comparison for this boom, it appears to me, is not the Great Financial Crisis but the 2010s fracking boom. Many fracking companies ultimately failed and many more never approached profitability in the 2010s and saw their stock valuations crater. But fracking never caused any widespread financial damage or even a mild recession. It simply was not a macrofinancial threat.

Everyone's memories of the Fall incident will be different, but what I saw at the time was people who had lived through the Sad Puppies saying "we can't allow regressive fiction to gain a toehold." I think that qualifies! With Neon Yang the harassers were just being racist

Stu West @stuwest.com · 13/08/2026
I think any lightly-moderated platform designed to maximise engagement will turn into a harassment engine by default, it doesn’t really need any specific mindset

Excesses of Woke 1, including l'affaire Isabel Fall, are imo best seen as a minor theatre of the online harassment that was all over Peak Twitter. It did have a nasty effect on group dynamics on the left because harassment became so normalised, and I think that's what some people are remembering
