They’re obviously playing the long game by making the character into Tom King, guaranteeing that Tom King won’t be able to resist writing them a 12-issue Miracleman maxi-series whenever he’s out of contract with DC
David Colton was born a frail, asthmatic and short kid. After he witnessed the September 11th attack, David went enlist to the Army. Constantly bullied by the other recruits, his fate changed after a brutal beating by his sergeant, he was chosen to undergo the Super-Soldier Serum process.[4] New and fresh, Colton was dubbed "Captain America" and was deployed to both Afghanistan[3] and Iraq,[5] marking the beginning of his descent into cynicism.

What if the AI boom is a bubble but doesn’t cause a recession when it ends? Nathan Tankus compared it to the fracking boom
What it can do, and is already doing, is causing significant damage to the physical and social environment near these data centers. The proper comparison for this boom, it appears to me, is not the Great Financial Crisis but the 2010s fracking boom. Many fracking companies ultimately failed and many more never approached profitability in the 2010s and saw their stock valuations crater. But fracking never caused any widespread financial damage or even a mild recession. It simply was not a macrofinancial threat.

I'm not the world's biggest Norman Mailer fan, so his overview of Oliver Stone's career is my favourite thing he ever wrote. "One of the worst great movies ever made" a real banger of a line in my view
Paragraph from Mailer's essay Footfalls in the Crypt, reprinted from Vanity Fair. "We come, then, to JFK. It is the boldest work yet of a bold and clumsy man, but the first thing to be said about it is that it is a great movie, and the next is that it is one of the worst great movies ever made. It is great in spite of itself, and such greatness owes more to the moxie of the director than to his special talents. Nonetheless, it is an incomparable experience which moves into parts of our heart that we have anesthetized for years."

There's a reprint of an illustrated article Gary Trudeau did for the New York Times depicting Oliver Stone in a motorcade with media commentators taking potshots at him. We need a prominent cartoonist to draw Nolan's critical odyssey, maybe Kate Beaton is available
"May 7, 1991: As Oliver Stone cruises down Hollywood Boulevard, he suddenly finds himself under fire. A troubled Chicago Tribune columnist named Jon Margolis is held responsible... May 19. Stone, shaken by this vicious first strike, swerves to avoid a follow-up salvo from The Washington Post. The shooter, identified to readers only as "George Lardner Jr. " has known ties to organized journalism."

I've got the official tie-in book to Oliver Stone's JFK, which contains not just the screenplay and some historical notes, but also reviews, news articles and outraged letters to the editor about the movie, and I strongly feel Christopher Nolan should now publish something similar for The Odyssey
Cover to JFK: The Book of the Film. Featuring "the documented screenplay" and "the JFK debate" with contributions from Norman Mailer, Tom Wicker, Gerald R. Ford and others

One of my favourite Shooter facts is that in the '90s he was going around telling people that the impenetrable storytelling of The Dark Knight Returns was dooming the comics industry. An idiosyncratic character (positive and negative), which this excellent article brings out really well
Excerpt from an Ng Suat Tong article in TCJ #187.
"ITS 1992 AND YOU’RE ATTENDING
an industry roundtable, when somebody you’ve
seen somewhere and heard of in some maga-
zine stands up to make a short statement. Ap-
parently he’s given The Dark Knight Returns to
his brother-in-law who has “[thrown] it over his
shoulder in disgust”:"[cont]
"He could not make head or tail of it. Sorry Frank,
but the fact is we’re talking to ourselves a lot here,
guys... We've got to toughen up as creators, and as
publishers, I think. We’ve got to realize that if
we’re going to get out there and communicate, we
had better start being communicators. We'd better
learn our craft... Storytelling has been around
forever... If we don’t... stop being these six-month
wonders who think that just because they can do
glitzy graphics that they somehow now know what
they're doing in terms of speaking a visual
language, we’re in big trouble."[cont]
"The person sitting beside you nods his head
in agreement. You instantly recognize the
speaker as the man the Journal has been calling
the Beast of the Apocalypse. Somebody says to
you, “That’s Jim Shooter.” As if you didn’t
know. You understand that his words are meant
strictly for the superhero market and those..."[cont]
"...interested in the commercial viability of com-
ics. The question is whether you nod your head
in agreement as well or whether you feel like
strangling him?"

My take is basically The Shooter Memo, but for Doctor Who
Memo from Marvel editor-in-chief Jim Shooter to his editorial team, dated October 18th, 1984: “Effective immediately start doing good comics. I realize that this directive reflects a substantial departure from previous company policy, but please try to comply.”

DC keeps making Superman movies but somehow they never adapt his archetypal storyline, the one from the 90s where he becomes dangerously jacked and has to abandon Earth for space to safeguard humanity
Dangerously jacked Superman floating outside Lois's balconyDangerously jacked Superman in a fight sceneDangerously jacked Superman saying goodbye to Lois in an alleywayDangerously jacked Superman strapped to a space shuttle heading into orbit

Some classic 1991 dialogue here, will we ever see its like again
Panels from Incredible Hulk 387 by Peter David and Dale Keown. Sabra is punching the Hulk saying "I'm small and you're huge... but so is Israel small, and we stand up against our enemies! Attack us and we endure! Drop Scuds on us, we endure! And we give as good as we get!"

In the last panel, the Hulk lands as the foot of the Western Wall thinking "Terrific. I'm not fighting a woman. I'm fighting the Zionist recruiting board."

Sad to hear Gerry Conway has died. He played a big part in my becoming a comics fan, since one of the first issues I bought off a newsstand was written by him and had Spider-Man being shoved in a fridge and dropped down an elevator shaft. He was my first favourite comics writer. RIP
Spider-Man being stuffed in a fridge by his enemy The Molten Man. The part where the fridge got dropped down an elevator shaft happened a couple of pages later

The image of Mandela as an icon of nonviolence doesn’t survive reading his Rivonia speech. He was very explicit!
At the beginning of June 1961, after a long and anxious assessment of the South
African situation, I, and some colleagues, came to the conclusion that as violence in
this country was inevitable, it would be unrealistic and wrong for African leaders to continue preaching peace and nonviolence at a time when the Government
met our peaceful demands with force.Four forms of violence were possible.
There is sabotage, there is guerrilla warfare, there is terrorism, and there is open revolution. We chose to adopt the first method and to exhaust it before
taking any other decision.
