enjoyed this post from @dylanpkane.bsky.social about the problem of insufficient practice. h/t to @michaelt1979.bsky.social 's server for alerting me to it. This is one reason why I like using tech, for that unlimited practice. Another option is to buy supplemental curriculum, which I do.

I'm having fun teaching my pre-algebra students how to calculate square roots by hand. Why are we doing this? It's good number sense! In case you don't know how, here are the steps:

One of the neat things about teaching is that I get to explain lots of things. For example, today I am explaining the CNO process in nuclear fusion in the heart of stars, how to create the three basic shapes through geometric construction, and the concept of scientific notation.

One of the parts of teaching I most enjoy is a weekly selection of an example of the excellent work that my students are doing and asking parental permission to share it. Reminds me that my work matters, and that I can share that joy with my students and their parents.

Collins termed "the Stockdale Paradox." As Collins described, drawing upon Stockdale's experiences as a prisoner-of-war:
You must maintain unwavering faith that you can and will prevail in the end, regardless of the difficulties, and at the same time, have the discipline to confront the most brutal facts of your current reality, whatever they might be.

Kicking it old school today: teaching students to find square roots by hand. Does great things for conceptual understanding of roots.
Approximate the square root of 55 to the tenths' place
Step 1: first find the two integers between which the sq rt of 55 lies
Step 2: divide 55 by the estimate, 7.3
Step 3: average the divisor and quote
Step 4: repeat until the desired place value is identical for the divisor and quotient

So lovely to reach out to a family to ask if I can use their student's work as an examplar in future years and have them be happy about it. Sometimes, as an instructor, just being able to say that a student is doing well brings joy.

I spend a lot of time on the distributive property.
GCF of 8 and 48 is 8
         1 2 3 4 5 6
8 8 4 x 2
48 48 24 16 12 x 8
8 + 48 = 8 (1 + 6) = 8 + 48

8/8 = 1 48/8 = 6

“Memory is often discussed by scientists in a way that turns a fascinating subject into dry prose. However, Harvard brings these ideas to life, continually returning to the question: Do I have your attention? He explores different forms of memory, the power of sensing, attending, and rehearsing, and identifies various chokepoints, such as the pitfalls of multitasking. He also reveals how students often fail to choose the most effective study methods. The most exciting part comes with his discussion on maximizing learning, where he details numerous effective techniques, providing practical advice and examples, all rooted in his teaching experiences. A powerful, beautifully written overview of what really matters to develop student learning.”

–Dr. John Hattie, Professor of Education and Director of the Melbourne Education Research Institute at the University of Melbourne, Australia“Human cognition is complex. Applying our knowledge of human cognition to instructional procedures is more complex. Explaining it in an intelligible fashion is herculean. Blake Harvard has brilliantly accomplished this explanatory task. I recommend this book to all engaged in the teaching profession.”

Hitting the distributive property hard this week!! Starting with defining terms, so we can talk about it properly, and then extrapolating up from single digit and double digit multiplication, pausing at the area model as well.
