Enjoyed this from Michele Caracappa during my morning coffee: michelecaracappa.substack.com/p/a-new-scho...
Collins termed "the Stockdale Paradox." As Collins described, drawing upon Stockdale's experiences as a prisoner-of-war:
You must maintain unwavering faith that you can and will prevail in the end, regardless of the difficulties, and at the same time, have the discipline to confront the most brutal facts of your current reality, whatever they might be.

Kicking it old school today: teaching students to find square roots by hand. Does great things for conceptual understanding of roots.
Approximate the square root of 55 to the tenths' place
Step 1: first find the two integers between which the sq rt of 55 lies
Step 2: divide 55 by the estimate, 7.3
Step 3: average the divisor and quote
Step 4: repeat until the desired place value is identical for the divisor and quotient

8 8 4 x 2
48 48 24 16 12 x 8

you're not alone. From the story
One of the attorneys behind the case, Benjamin Elga, said he listened to Sold a Story and immediately saw “an injustice that cried out for redress.”

“I wish I had been educated about this issue 20 years ago and had been able to pitch in then,” said Elga, the executive director at Justice Catalyst Law, a New York nonprofit that files public-interest litigation.

In an interview, Elga said he views Massachusetts as an attractive venue for the case because of its strong consumer protection laws. Massachusetts also takes a largely hands-off approach to how schools teach reading, resisting a national trend toward legislating curricula. In a recent survey conducted by the state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, 24 of the 155 school districts that identified an early

Plato on Writing
Socrates [to Phaedrus]: ... Now the king of the whole country at that time was Thamus, who dwelt in the great city of Upper Egypt which the Greeks call Egyptian Thebes, while Thamus they call Ammon. To him came Theuth, and revealed his arts, saying that they ought to be passed on to the Egyptians in general. Thamus asked what was the use of them all, and when Theuth explained, he condemned what he thought the bad points and praised what he thought the good. On each art, we are told, Thamus had plenty of views both for and against; it would take too long to give them in detail. But when it came to writing Theuth said, 'Here, O king, is a branch of learning that will make the people of Egypt wiser and improve their memories; my discovery provides a recipe for memory and wisdom.' But the king answered and said, 'O man full of arts, to one it is given to create the things of art, and to another to judge what measure of harm and of profit they have for those that shall employ them. And so it is that you, by reasons of your tender regard for the writing that is your offspring, have declared the very opposite of its true effect. If men learn this, it will implant forgetfulness in their souls; they will cease to exercise memory because they rely on that which is written, calling things to remembrance no longer from within themselves, but by means of external marks. What you have discovered is a recipe not for memory, but for reminder. And it is no true wisdom that you offer your disciples, but only its semblance, for by telling them of many things without teaching them you will make them seem to know much, while for the most part they know nothing, and as men filled, not with wisdom but with the conceit of wisdom, they will be a burden to their fellows.'
Plato (c. 429-347 B.C.E), "Phaedrus" (c. 360 B.C.E.), 274c-275 b, Reginald) Hackforth, transl.,

As a certified special education teacher (visual impairment) who works with many students who have a special education need, this is a pretty decent summary:
If you're keeping score, this leaves us with three significantly different approaches for identifying LD:
1. Exclusionary definition - if a kid is struggling with reading/math and there's no other good explanation for why, they have an LD. (Or you could say a "specific learning disorder.")
2. IQ-achievement gap - if a kid is underperforming what you'd expect from their
IQ test, and there's no good explanation for why, they have an LD.
3. Response to intervention - if a kid recieves research-validated instruction and it doesn't
work, and there's no good explanation for why, they have an LD.
The RTI approach, however, puts the burden on schools and how interventions work in practice. Oh, terrific. A 2015 study found looked at 20,000 first-graders who had been targeted for RTI. And how did that go?:
"First graders who received reading interventions actually did worse than virtually identical peers who did not get the more targeted assistance."

One of the most vivid arithmetic failings displayed by Americans occurred in the early 1980s, when the A&W restaurant chain released a new hamburger to rival the McDonald's Quarter Pounder. With a third-pound of beef, the A&W burger had more meat than the Quarter Pounder; in taste tests, customers preferred A&W's burger. And it was less expensive. A lavish A&W television and radio marketing campaign cited these benefits. Yet instead of leaping at the great value, customers snubbed it.
Only when the company held customer focus groups did it become clear why. The Third Pounder presented the American public with a test in fractions. And we failed.
Misunderstanding the value of one-third, customers believed they were being overcharged. Why, they asked the researchers, should they pay the same amount for a third of a pound of meat as they did for a quarter-pound of meat at MeDonald's. The

One last thought: as an educator, I place a high value on education. That is simply not true for a large part of our population--and that's ok! Not everyone has to like what I like! But recognizing that instead of pathologizing that is probably helpful.
Is it the case, though, that sometimes not attending is simply a choice or behaviour issue and if so, how easy is it to spot when mental health or SEND is not a factor?

It is safest to assume that there is a problem that needs solving and that is more likely to be SEND, mental health or bullying, or some other adverse experience. Curious exploration will reveal issues in most cases.

This sort of anecdote is a) not the plural of data, and b) strikes me as a sort of fearmongering. Children so entangled in screens that they prefer them to an actual human! Mm, yeah, no, not buying it. Who among us has not wanted to finish the last few minutes of that episode before bed? Or work?
Are there any examples of increased screen use playing a role?

One interesting element is from talking to audiologists, who say there has been an upswing in children where it’s really difficult to test their hearing because they don’t really respond to humans, they respond to screens. And that may be because they would sit in front of a screen while their parents worked, sometimes for hours.

This is simply wrong, and I'm disappointed the interviewer didn't call her out on it. Autism and ADHD are not "mental health conditions." And no, this is not a USA vs UK thing, either. Check out the NHS definition, below.
Is that link between SEND and mental health something teachers should be expected to spot? Does SEND make mental health diagnoses more difficult?

The relationship is complex. Autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder are both mental health conditions and can cause SEND; poor physical health is a risk factor for mental health conditions (particularly if the health problem affects the central nervous system, such as epilepsy) and can lead to SEND; learning problems are separately a risk factor for mental health and struggles with the school environment, with issues like bullying more common among children with SEND, which can precipitate mental health conditions.https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/autism/what-is-autism/
Autism is not an illness
Being autistic does not mean you have an illness or disease. It means your brain works in a different way from other people.

It's something you're born with. Signs of autism might be noticed when you're very young, or not until you're older.

If you're autistic, you're autistic your whole life.

Autism is not a medical condition with treatments or a "cure". But some people need support to help them with certain things.

This is *not* what a "bi-directional" relationship means. "bi" means 2--there are TWO directions of influence. I will acknowledge missing school can lead to loneliness, and --> poor mental health. But the other direction matters, too. School can ---> negative mental health. Where's that in this?
Professor Tamsin Ford: We know there is a bi-directional relationship between mental health and attendance at school: if your attendance is poor, then your mental health may well deteriorate because you lose the chance to connect with peers, and so you become socially isolated [and less likely to attend school].
