The student journalists at the Daily have been doing great work on this story. I’m consistently impressed by them.

I found out about the basket of apples because a student mentioned the “cake analogy” of intersectionality, which I had never heard. I also think I don’t like that one 🙃

I do a three class module in my black feminisms class. We read some immediate precursors to Crenshaw, then Crenshaw’s ‘89 article because so many haven’t ever seen it even if they have some familiarity with the term, and then today was critiques of intersectionality.

I have just come across a 2022 essay arguing that a better metaphor for Crenshaw’s concept of intersectionality is a basket of apples and I am both baffled and furious. I have to go yell at my friend who is a metaphysician about this.

Attacks on the humanities/humanistic social sciences are attacks on women, Black people and other people of color, poor and queer folks, and others whose presence threatens power's smooth functioning. They're an aspect of the same project that undermines libraries and public education.

Corruption and inaction are the norm in campus policing--even beyond what you think you already know about other police agencies. There is good reason that people are calling for the abolition of campus police departments specifically right now. They maintain an elite lawlessness on campus.

LOL. Rufo is a fascist whose entire career strategy is racism. The fact that these folks believe anything about the current GOP is colorblind is an indictment of their ability to think, their honesty, their grasp of reality. It‘s also revealing of their political sympathies.

Impossible to understand how anyone could look at Rufo's career and conclude he was someone engaged in a "forthright defense of meritocracy." Rufo's entire career is built on the idea of purging people who don't think or look like him from positions of power.

Alternative response programs, where mental health clinicians respond to 911 calls instead of police, have proliferated since George Floyd's murder. What does it take to do this work well?

Black people who can read and think and write have always been a problem for racists. Nothing new here. Remember anti-literacy laws? Great Grandma Edie was wont to argue that school segregation existed for so long b/c white folks didn’t want Black folks to know that they were no smarter than we.

Anti-safety advocates tried to stop the city from putting in this sidewalk on a route to 3 schools. They fought it at every step, driving in from across town to pack public meetings and the neighborhood walk-through. It’s exhausting having to battle for every foot of sidewalk. But we won! #a2council

The letter from 25 Fields Medalists defending the practice of mathematics uses revealing language, describing math as a "creative" endeavor sustained by human-to-human transmission. After decades of contempt for the Humanities looks like we're all Humanists now. terrytao.wordpress.com/2026/09/11/a...
Often these solutions are announced in a rush, leaving no time for a proper writeup, the isolation of new methods and ideas, and citing relevant previous work of others. As in all creative professions, this raises severe attribution and plagiarism questions. Moreover, without the willing mathematicians who must take care of their development and integration into the mathematical canon, AI-conceived ideas would never become fully alive and the crucial human transmission chain between mathematicians would be lost.
