Did you know your MacBook has a sensor that knows the exact angle of the screen hinge? It’s not exposed as a public API, but I figured out a way to read it and make it sound like an old wooden door.

Write flat tests. No "describe", no scenario nesting, no beforeEach/afterEach hooks (as a rule). Each test case is self-contained, listing all the setup it needs. Use Symbol.dispose for reliable cleanup. Use granular test cases. ☝️ These things will make your tests shine.

Trump's lawyers are absolutely flailing in the courts right now

A screenshot of a text excerpt from a court proceeding, showing a conversation between Judge Reyes and Jason C. Lynch about an executive order that defines “sex” strictly as male or female. Judge Reyes challenges this definition, noting that there are roughly 30 different intersex variations and citing examples such as XXX chromosomes, androgen insensitivity, and five-alpha reductase deficiency. Judge Reyes emphasizes that not everyone fits neatly into an XX or XY pattern, concluding that the executive order’s premise—that there are only two sexes—is biologically incorrect.

Historically (like, for the past decade), I’ve used SVG if <20 things were moving and Canvas for 20+. But I think the threshold nowadays is in the hundreds. The lowest anyone has reported so far is 4900 SVG <circles> being the threshold 😲

Research shows that right-on-red causes pedestrians and cyclists to get hit. The US is the only rich country where ROR is legal. It was introduced in the 1970s as a way to save gas during the oil crisis, and then we just … kept it. www.fastcompany.com/90908929/its...

It’s time to ban ‘right-on-red’

Right-on-red turns are dangerous for pedestrians and cyclists, and yet they're still widely allowed across the U.S.

To learn the fundamentals, some would suggest starting with the big bang, and working your way up from there. The pragmatic approach is to start where you're at, then go down the stack until you hit the hardware, and up the stack until you reach the humans using your stuff.

My cartoon for Guardian Books’ autumn reading special.

A beautiful, smiling pile of new books labelled "New Books for Autumn" innocently attracts the attentions of a young man. Beside him, his pile of books (labelled "Unfinished Summer Reading") notices this and scowls at him.

The image is a cartoon pastiche of the ‘distracted boyfriend’ meme.
