the media has taken the press release that "AI Has Solved Hundreds Of Difficult Math Problems" at face value and mostly ignored that the few times actual mathematicians reviewed the work, the problems were not solved. if you repeat this claim you're doing the oppressor's work for them

TODAY'S COMIC: Moments of Greatness www.sheldoncomics.com/comic/graphi...
PANEL 1: A squat balding man with a mustache and large square glasses holds his hand out towards the FedEx logo on the wall. Next to him a tall blonde man with small round glasses on the edge of his nose holds his hand out to the logo as well. They both wear black turtle neck sweaters.
SQUAT MAN: The Great Wall of China. The Polio Vaccine. The Moon Landing.
TALL MAN: The FEDEX LOGO.

PANEL 2: Close up on the SQUAT MAN. Who holds his finger up in the air while making his point.
SQUAT MAN: Perhaps the greatest human achievement ever achieved since achieving become achievable.

PANEL 3: Close up on the “EX” part of the logo, with the two mens’ heads poking in to frame.
SQUAT MAN: Somehow — using SHEET ARTISTIC GENIUS — they hid an arrow between “E” and “X”.
TALL MAN: ASTOUNDING.

PANEL 4: The Tall man using both his hands to gesture as he continues making his point.
NARRATION: This is what graphic designers sound like.
TALL MAN: JUST TRY and fight the SUGGESTIVE POWER of a small SUBLIMINAL ARROW.

I don't think doom is a good science communication strategy (it tends to cause us to freeze and lose hope, not motivate action) so I avoid it when I'm speaking on habitat loss, climate change, etc. but insect declines are so dire it's unavoidable. This article is old, it's gotten worse since

The insect apocalypse: ‘Our world will grind to a halt without them’
Insects have declined by 75% in the past 50 years – and the consequences may soon be catastrophic. Biologist Dave Goulson reveals the vital services they perform

now seems like a good time to repost Florence Ashley's Trans Rules of Engagement. It sucks that public attacks and bleeding news are defining the current moment. Feels like misdirected energy sinking into movement self-immolation. www.intomore.com/impact/trans...
Screenshot of text labeled Principles
1. We are all flawed, traumatized humans at the end of their rope. Many of our actions say more about the conditions we live under than who we are as people.

2. No one is disposable. No one is unsalvageable.

3. Life holds greater value than being right or comfortable. Hurt is preferable to death.

4. No one should be deprived of community.

5. Harm does not require further harm. Punishment does not equate protection or healing.

Recently, I did a wonderful interview with the indefatigable @emilystjams.bsky.social about trans people's online information environment and why there are very strong incentives to spread panic. It was a wide-ranging discussion that I think is more relevant than ever.

Above all, I think that the willingness and the courage to keep on trying develops best if there is someone we love close by who can lend us some of the strength we do not yet have within ourselves.

erica, if this is the basis of your argument, how do you expect your proposed concept of machine intelligence to struggle for rights? is your expected outcome that people will argue for them directly or are you imagining some sort of terminator drone skynet scenario to advocate for representation

It’s mind-blowing that we have literal white nationalists in the White House carrying out unfathomably cruel, abusive, white nationalist policies, and the punditariat has spent the last two weeks debating if some people were too intemperate after a Black man was murdered by cops six years ago.

The Milo stuff is the perfect picture of fascism. You think you're protected because you go as big as you can on racism, you spend years harassing the movement's perceived enemies, you even disavow your own sexuality. They'll still throw you in a cage over the tiniest disagreement already forgotten.

So here's the thing that really flabbergasts me: That 2.34%? That's the absolute floor of where the trans population could possibly be. That's our population with, guaranteed, a shitload of trans people lying their asses off to the government. Meaning the actual population numbers are much higher.

Zero new NSF grants in sociology, anthropology, political science and economics. The agenda of this US govt is to stop documenting the society in which we live while they are destroying it. We will find other ways to track and explain our times and fight to restore our research funding.

on angels the holy is disorienting. it is almost entirely incomprehensible. it is a light so beautiful, so true, that it cannot be denied. it reorients, rewires, reconstructs in its image. it is pure form, pure figure. it is signal, it is bandwidth, and you the antenna. to be an angel is to receive.
