The imposing Callanish Stones stand talk with their shadows spanning out across the glass. It's a super clear sky, but looks cold. Above the central stone is a strange figure-of-8 shape of dots. This is the location of the Sun, at noon, on various different days across the year.

What is humanism? Humanism is a non-religious approach to life, centred on living a meaningful, ethical life based on reason and compassion. Humanists see the universe as a natural phenomenon with no supernatural side, and look to science to answer questions about the natural world. Humanists believe this life is the only life we have, so they focus on living well in the here and now, guided by empathy and our shared humanity.

What does it mean to be a humanist, anyway?
A humanist is a person who recognises this life is the only life we know we have, and therefore, resolved to live a moral and fulfilling life in the here and now, based on the inherent human capacity for compassion, and a desire to do good on its own merit. Being a humanist is simply a way of thinking and living that emphasises humanity's capacity and responsibility to promote human flourishing across all frontiers, to protect the natural world, and to work towards a more tolerant society, where rational thinking and kindness prevail.

HUMANISTS VALUE INDIVIDUALITY, CREATIVITY, AND COMMUNITY

Humanists recognise that there isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach to a happy life.
We have unique hobbies, preferences, and tastes.
But at the same time, we still have much more in common.
Most people aspire to lead good, happy, decent lives.

Humanists see this as the one life we have.
This means we all need the freedom to make our own choices over our own lives.

And yet living well isn’t just a private matter.
Our choices affect others. A good life is one lived with consideration, kindness, and an awareness of our impact on the people and world around us.

Humanists today place compassion and connection at the heart of living well.
We try to live thoughtfully, act compassionately, and always celebrate human joy, creativity, discovery, and achievement.

Regretting the past is futile: we should look to the future and continue repairing our relationship with Europe. This can start with aligning, but should not end there. We must strive to realign the UK as an associate member of European agencies, but rejoin key initiatives such as the single market.
Brexit has not been good for our country, for growth, for prices in the shop. It’s almost 10 years since we voted Leave. That ship has sailed, but there’s an awful lot we can do to improve our trading relations. Where that requires alignment in our national interest, we should absolutely align. Carl Sagan's guide to detecting nonsense. Humanist reasoning 👌
Infographic titled “Carl Sagan’s Baloney Detection Kit: A humanist guide for detecting nonsense.” At the top is a stylised illustration of Carl Sagan’s profile. The graphic lists nine principles for critical thinking in numbered boxes:

Confirmation of facts – always seek independent evidence.

Encourage debate – welcome substantive debate from knowledgeable proponents of all views.

Question authority – authority is not a substitute for evidence.

Try more than one hypothesis – consider alternative explanations.

Stay open to changing your mind – be willing to abandon ideas that don’t hold up.

Quantify where possible – use numbers to help discriminate between hypotheses.

Every link in the chain must work – all parts of an argument must be sound.

Occam’s razor – prefer the simplest explanation that fits the evidence.

Beware the unfalsifiable – scientific claims must be testable.

The Humanists UK logo appears at the bottom, with a note that the guide is adapted from Carl Sagan’s The Demon-Haunted World (1995).
