In short, I think there is no other way around for the UK than to think about a serious accession bid to the EU. All other options are underwhelming given the economic size of the UK and its political interests in influencing EU policy.

But we are bad at reckoning with such a future.
We find the image of such discontinuity both overwhelmingly bleak and terrifying, and also histrionic and implausible. It is our job, then, to teach ourselves to believe truly in its possibility, and to marshal everything we have in our power to prevent it. Because the longed-for miracle has already occurred. We have every technology necessary to turn around the climate crisis. It is not only within our human reach but comparatively straightforward. We have the skills and the expertise and the materials. What we do not have is the political will. But it can be created - for it is the people who create it.

UK govt plans £1bn energy bills help for poorer households. How about cutting energy profit margins, 100% windfall tax on excess profits before turning to the public purse. UK energy sector is mostly foreign-owned. Dividends paid without any UK tax deduction. End this perk, raise billions.

I wonder why Badenoch couldn't say that London benefitted from Brexit 🤔 The reality is that neither London nor any other region in the UK has benefitted from Brexit - the opposite is the case. That's why our polling with YouGov shows that 628 out of 632 constituencies want to rejoin the EU.

Brexit has been a Tory masterclass in ideological madness. It’s widely accepted by the country as a barrelling shitshow but *still* their entitled little reps strut about insisting we can’t be allowed to vote on it again. Who TF does this person think she is? And why TF should she decide anything?

Climate change is speeding up four kinds of risk at once: • climatological (heat, drought, fire weather) • hydrological (floods, water scarcity) • biological (disease, ecosystem collapse) • geomorphological (landslides, erosion, thaw) They do not arrive one by one. They stack.

Discussions like this are only possible if you remove universal concepts like empathy, dignity and human rights from the table. But at that point, with barbarism treated as an acceptable norm for human behaviour, you might as well be talking about the benefits of canibalism, incest and slavery.

History is written by the victors. Thatcher broke the power of trade unions by mass unemployment, industrial restructuring, frittered away N Sea Oil, laid the foundations for the current housing crisis, decimated local bus services, hollowed out local government and introduced the poll tax.
Simon Clarke

Andy Burnham seems to remember a different 1970s to the rest of us. Britain in 1979 was utterly broken - ravaged by unaccountable trade union power, economically stagnant, the sick man of Europe.
The 1980s saw a remarkable national recovery based on free enterprise, the rule of law and championing Western values. And it is this that our Prime Minister rails against...
