On this day 50 years ago, on 17 June 1976, St Athan’s Boys Village celebrated its Golden Jubilee. A holiday camp for the sons of miners, it was run by the Boys and Girls Clubs of Wales.

Herbert Smith, President of the Miners’ Federation of Great Britain 1922-29, was born in a workhouse in Kippax, West Yorkshire #OnThisDay 1862. A miner from the age of 10, Smith was the miners’ chief spokesman during the 1926 General Strike.
