Late Jameson
 by
Jed Esty

Despite having passed away in the autumn of 2024, Fredric Jameson published two books in that same year (they will not, we are told, be his last). It makes sense, given Jameson's career-long engagements, that one of these is a “theory book” and the other a “novel book.” When we read the two together, some interesting patterns and contrasts emerge. For example, the theory book's subtitle claims to follow its topic to the present, but the story of French thought, for Jameson, has a beginning, a middle, and an end. His account implies an arc: forty glorious years from 1950 to 1990—the rest is aftermath. The novel book, on the other hand, makes good on Jameson's wish to address the present. The novel is in its crisis of globalization. The crisis is not over, and neither is the novel, not quite. And that is maybe the most important thing to say at the outset.
