Success… once the driver pointed out to me which one of the 4 “fare boxes” accepts a contactless credit card payment — which the marta website had helpfully let me know was a payment option

Well done! Among grocery stores in town it’s one of the easier to bike too (the “back” way) and also well served by transit. Now if only they’d put in some bike racks at that shopping center

My longest train trip was to Chicago (and back). Some day I’ll do a full cross country train trip. I thought it might be summer ‘27 for a conference in Seattle, but then the conference moved to Europe (Vienna)

It’s remarkable how many people can move on a street when those people don’t feel the need to always take a massive car with them. Mobility in cities is about space.
Busy European street with buses filled with people in a long line of people on bikes, waiting for the light to change in a separated, protected bike lane. Imagine if all those people or each in a separate car.

Why travel to Atlanta via train? It’s only a coincidence that week without driving starts tomorrow—this choice is part of my general commitment to sustainable transportation. Trains offer a path to post carbon mass transit than airplanes lack

Heading off this evening via Amtrak on a work trip. Though the train is delayed, I rest easy knowing when I board I have a bed waiting for me (a “roomette”). And, a few hours after waking up I’ll be at my destination: Atlanta

yeah, it sucks. last time I flew into Dulles was even later in the day & I had a flexible schedule—I stayed the night at a hotel w/ an airport shuttle & next day caught a mid-day bus back to walking distance to home. That wildly impractical approach shows just how hard it is to avoid driving
