strong statement from the Association for Human Mathematicians. "Releasing over 700 files at once is not a demonstration of scholarship, but a demonstration of power. We urge mathematicians to discontinue their work with OpenAI and to return to a vision of science that centers human understanding."

beautiful quote by a PhD student “Just like a photograph of a mile marker can’t provide much of the value of actually going on a hike... proofs without stories, or even stories without struggle or mystery, and first glimpses of strange beasts, are not very meaningful or valuable to us humans.”

“Perhaps the most relevant issue is that by releasing this trove of material in this manner, the companies are in the process of destroying the ecosystem that made it possible for this work,” she said." To me, this is the crux. Science is a human, community endeavor. They are destroying science.

I should possibly make more precise that it is technically not the seismic P-wave we see but the acoustic response of the water to the seismic P-wave …

All this data is free to access from anywhere and can be obtained using only the following few lines of #python code using the #Obspy software. Appreciate that this data is open - it is really fantastic!

The seismic P-wave comes first and arrives at the two arrays very closely separated in time. The much bigger hydro wave is much slower so there is a big delay between the arrivals at the two arrays. earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/...

Nerd time. A couple of really big #earthquakes in the mid-Atlantic ridge this morning (6.7 and 6.9 - but harmless). Absolutely beautiful #hydroacoustic signals on the two IMS hydro arrays at Ascension Island. There are two triads of instruments (see doi.org/10.1080/2575... for details).

Autumn at Ullevål Stadion, Oslo. This is the colour and clarity of the sky when the chances of the occurrence of Northern lights approaches zero. On Saturday night when the northern hemisphere was ablaze with green, violet and red heavens, Oslo sat under thick rain clouds.

NEW: In March the White House released an FY27 budget request that zeroed out the National Science Foundation's directorate of Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences (SBE). For months it was unclear what would happen. Now, with FY26 over, the damage to SBE is coming to light. My reporting:

My latest cartoon for @newscientist.com
As we join the great theoretical scientist, he is deep in thought. So still, quiet and focused that he might almost be asleep. But inside that brilliant mind, what new idea is forming? What certainty is being meticulously interrogated? What ingenious theory is ready to change our world forever? (the scientist snores lightly) Ah, it seems he actually is asleep. And that's fine. Science is hard and not every day can be a success. We will come back another time.
