Inspiring Travel Ideas for 2026
Chosen By Our Readers Who Are Microplastics

2
Stuck for somewhere to go on holiday this year? Microplastic Guardian readers offer their travel tips

3

A Pristine highland river

This glorious unspoilt Scottish river feels a million miles from a sausage roll packet, but it’s actually just a short picnic away!

Paul and David, sausage roll packet bits

4
Breathtaking Mountaintop

True travellers know it’s not about the destination, but the journey. We simply left our plastic bag with no plan, hopping a serendipitously from gust to gust all the way to the Haute-Pyrénées

Sue and Tom, bits of plastic bag

5
Polar Bear’s balls

Since we left our Space Invaders packet in 1983, we've developed a taste for adventure. Most tourists are happy with package holidays in European genitals, but the Arctic Circle has some wonderful undiscovered testes.

Janet and Ian, crisp packet particles

6
Human foetus

Human placentas are such tourist traps, with every single one on Earth now occupied by microplastic holidaymakers. We've gone ‘off the beaten track’ and entered the a delightful foetus’s lungs.

The Wilsons, ground Ford Ka indicator wand.

7
Liz Truss

We’ve spent four glorious summers in the frontal cortex of former UK Government star, Elizabeth Truss. A truly vibrant spot to just sit back, relax, and watch the colourful thoughts roll by!

Diogo and Shawna, spork dust

8
Your Child’s Eyeball

The wonder of travel is seeing the world with fresh eyes, and you can't get fresher than the eyes of your kid. Easily accessible via the bloodstream.

Dennis, polyurethane spray foam

9
The Mariana Trench

Ever since we were dropped into the sea in 2022, we’ve strayed ever further from the ’tourist trail’. Last year we found this blissfully peaceful Pacific trench.

I'd argue an AI first draft is *worse* than a blank page. It's starting with something barfed by the machine, so it will influence you, perhaps in ways you'll never even sense, but it will be there. When you start with an actual blank page, the mess is still *you*.

Absolutely amazing chart from @peterkellner.bsky.social's piece in @thenewworldmag.bsky.social today: www.thenewworld.co.uk/peter-kellne...
A flow chart shows 17.4 million leave voters in 2016, vs 16.1m remain. In 2025, 5 million of those people have died, and 3 million new voters have come of age.

The result (plus some people changing their mind) is 19.8 million voters now back rejoin, versus just 11.7 million wanting to stay out.

The only surefire way to stop oligarchs buying up the things we love is to drop those things the moment oligarchs buy them & that requires changing habits and massive self-discipline. It means going to alternatives that might not be quite as good or convenient. It’s really hard. But there it is.

my great-grandparents arrived in the UK in the 1890s with nothing. they sold pickles from the front room window, took in laundry, worked as tailors. their children were nurses, teachers, salesmen. their grandchildren were professors, designers, opticians, doctors, magistrates, entrepreneurs.

A deep dark forest. A scientist leads a guest through the trees, saying:

"The rewilding project has exceeded all of our expectations!
Keep your eyes open for the species that have come back: Red deer, wild boar, Pine marten.
Or perhaps even our proudest return: The great old one Yog-drath'll, eternal unsleeping evil of the primordial forest."

Superb piece by @jamesbloodworth.bsky.social in this month's @bylinetimes.bsky.social mag: "Britain's Media Has Let Nigel Farage Reshape Political Journalism - Why?" This article alone was worth my annual sub to one of the very few news outlets still doing proper journalism
Snippet of Byline Times, November 2025, pointing out how the British mainstream media has created a "perfect circle of self-perpetuating hype" around Nigel Farage, i.e. how his prominence in MSM feeds his popularity which in turn justifies further coverage, and so on. Author proposes that this is a predictable consequence of an industry that has restructured itself around virality.
