they can get quite big! That's why I thought zoropsis false wolf spider because they're bigger than the wolf spiders here but apparently they're mostly only in California

Off to my yearly stint in #Yosemite! I train our #BirdBanding crew every year for @instbirdpop.bsky.social. Our Yosemite MAPS stations are some of the longest-running banding stations in the US (over 30 years)! Here are a few of last year's birds (see alt text). 🪶🧪👩‍🔬🌎
Close up photo of a young male Yellow-rumped Warbler (Audubon's type). This bird is a steel blue with white eye arcs, a smudgy black breast band, and a bright yellow throat. This photo was taken to document the small amount of white mottling in his throat that helps to indicate he is still in formative plumage, and not yet in basic plumage as an adult would be.Photo of a male Western Tanager held in the photographer's grip for documentation. He has a red face, yellow nape, wingbar and rump, and black back, wings, and tail. Photos such as this one are taken quickly for documentation of plumage before the bird is then released.Photo of an adult male Anna's Hummingbird being held gently between fingertips while a person in a green shirt lowers a q-tip toward the bird's beak. The hummingbird is tiny with an iridescent purple head and a long black beak (with some fuzzy feathers stuck to the beak). The q-tip is part of a pollen collection study to see which plants are being pollinated by birds such as hummingbirds and warblers.

here’s a pair of easily confused species that I have seen others use as an example of why earthworm are not identifiable at a glance. left is Lumbricus terrestris, right is Aporrectodea longa. both are large worms that have converged on a similar color pattern and lifestyle—how to tell them apart?

A belated #FossilFriday post, but here is an exquisitely preserved Ficus leaf #fossil from the John Day formation (Oligo-Mio) in Oregon.
Photograph of a fossilized Ficus leaf from the John Day Formation in Oregon, preserved in tan-gray shale. The leaf shows detailed venation, with a prominent central vein and branching secondary veins, and is surrounded by a dark carbonized peripheral halo. A red keychain for scale lies nearby.Photograph of a fossilized Ficus leaf from the John Day Formation in Oregon, preserved in tan-gray shale. Please consider helping out the PRI Museum of the Earth, which just had a huge federal grant terminated early via executive order. Even if you're not in NY or USA, it's an amazing place and in general it's so vitally important for all of science to keep fossils safe and accessible.
