Where millionaire wealth concentration rose most, state democracy declined most. A shift-share instrument suggests that a 10-point rise in the millionaire wealth share lowers a state's democracy score by ~1.6 SD.
Binned scatter plot of millionaire wealth share (horizontal axis, about 44% to 65%) against the state electoral democracy index (vertical axis, higher values mean more democratic). The plot adjusts for average wealth and year fixed effects. A downward-sloping fitted line shows that states with higher wealth concentration have lower democracy scores. The coefficient is −0.42 and statistically significant: a one-standard-deviation increase in the millionaire wealth share is associated with a 0.42 standard deviation lower democracy score.

Timely new paper in @socioeconreview.bsky.social: Does rising wealth concentration undermine American democracy? Using variation across the 50 U.S. states, results reveal a clear, negative effect of millionaire wealth concentration on democratic performance. doi.org/10.1093/ser/mwag058
Wealth concentration in the United States has reached heights not seen since the Gilded Age, renewing fears that concentrated economic power may undermine democracy. Yet empirical research linking inequality to democratic erosion remains inconclusive, partly because most studies focus on cross-country comparison and examine income rather than wealth. This study exploits variation across fifty U.S. states; each
embedded in a common federal framework but differing in political and economic dynamics. To estimate the exogenous effect of rising wealth concentration on democratic backsliding, I develop a shift-share instrument of state-level millionaire wealth shares. Results reveal a clear, negative effect on democratic performance. Causal mediation analysis demonstrates that the effect is mediated by the share of seats held by
Republicans in state legislatures, pointing to a mechanism of elite influence through partisan channels. These findings demonstrate that subnational wealth disparities, and their convergence with partisan politics, actively erode American democratic institutions.

My team at the NVA Lab has produced a new dashboard for exploring our data on US protests from Jan 2025-May 2026. This snapshot shows the 61k+ protest events (>14.6M+ recorded participants) active in the US since Trump's second inauguration. Link to dashboard in thread.
A platform displaying the data on US protests from the Crowd Counting Consortium. It includes a map of the US with counts of protest events in circular form overlaying the protests' locations. It also includes weekly tallies of protest events and participations, top protest issues, and various filters allowing users to explore events by location, issue, date, political valence, etc. The top of the image shows a total of 61,782 protests with 14,684,201 participants across 55 US states and territories from January 20, 2025 to May 31, 2026.

Trump is not just a bad president. He's the Confederacy in control of the White House. Not merely an administration violating the Constitution in this or that particular matter, a regime fundamentally without legal validity in all respects whatsoever. A rebellion against the supreme law of the land.

"By 2021, Republicans, on average, perceived white people as facing more discrimination than Black people." link.springer.com/article/10.1...
ABSTRACT: The aftermath of the 2020 George Floyd protests illustrates a fundamental truism of race relations in America: racial progress is difficult to sustain. While the protests initially seemed to usher in a progressive era of racial politics, a counter-narrative quickly emerged arguing that efforts to remedy past injustices against people of color discriminated against white people. We show that this framing soon dominated media coverage of, and elite messages about, racial issues. Moreover, using data tracking public opinion between 2020 and 2024, we show that Americans came to believe that white (Black) people experienced more (less) discrimination. In fact, by 2021, Republicans, on average, perceived white people as facing more discrimination than Black people.

Pierre Bourdieu once argued that the question of whether something is art isn't answered by the artist's intention or even the object itself. Instead, the quality of being "art" is conferred by a community — curators, dealers, auction houses, audiences, etc. 🧵

This is treating Trump v. United States as law. It is not law. It is anti-law. It belongs in that category of Supreme Court decisions which were not merely wrong, they were illegitimate and non-binding from the day they were issued. It is owed no more respect than Lincoln gave Dred Scott.
