Email today telling me I am not “ethnically English”, and instead of reacting in anger or with insults when I’d respond with a picture of my parents it’s like the “are these cows small or far away?” scene.

Modern racism is fascinatingly stupid, in that in the 90s and 2000s, there were all sorts of racist things people would say about mixed race people but they weren’t confused and perplexed by your existence.

Yeah, for sure, completely agree: billionaires just are “built different” for this reason I think.

Some people have just marinated themselves in a mad milieu, and are in for a shock when they actually come into contact with the actual public.

No, the mindblowing thing about the long Nandy snooze is both Keir and Andy are genuinely cultured people.

I hate this so much. The BBC should be providing good quality, good value programmes that the private market won't cover. You and Yours (which I kind of hate), Thinking Allowed and Free Thinking are exactly the sort of programming that the BBC is i) good at, ii) not haemorrhaging money to make.

BBC to cut raft of Radio 4 programmes including You and Yours
The corporation said it would be investing in a new consumer programme, while announcing more cuts.

Right, a lot of travel, some philanthropy. (Philanthropy is just a great way to spend your life: you get to meet a lot of interesting people, you know that you are making a positive contribution to the world, doesn’t have to be full on)

There is a rather wider minority for abolishing the Monarchy (about 1 in 5 to 1 in 4) than for the controversy of whether only white people can be English (1 in 10). It is weird the media classes are so rarely across how niche this 'controversy' is - about 1/4 Reform voters, but few others

Today’s note: tactically, strategically and morally, Kemi Badenoch’s attack on Reform is the right line to draw. Now she has to enforce it:

Kemi Badenoch’s speech drew a moral dividing line between Tories and Reform
Opposition leader’s remarks will help distance her party from unpopular views on Englishness and court professional voters

Not only a fringe view currently being aggressively promoted for desperate reasons, it’s not even an interesting talking point as most pub conversations settled this decades ago. Less than 16% support for the (nonsensical in the case of Englishness) race essentialist view. Boring as well as nasty

Yes, thank you, I have noticed that the Republicans have changed since 2012. You really do need to get over your need to patronise everybody. Perhaps try engaging with what people have actually written and are talking about...

Just got served an advert in which a man talks at length about how a American asset manager is going to build data centres in the United Kingdom, which will raise our energy costs, where the punchline is 'therefore, time to get a solar panel fitted'.

I don't know how I can be more explicit with you that I am not talking about voting or electoral performance. Yes, the Republican party does worse among financial elites than it used to. That's not what I am talking about!

Stephen Bush @stephenkb.bsky.social · 10h
Completely agree.

Stephen Bush @stephenkb.bsky.social · 10h
Yeah, it really does help the Tories that Labour's own fantasy provides its own push factor, that the choice at the next election is 'one party I fear will do damage to the social fabric, one to the economy, both at best indifferent to my social values' does give 'my tax cut' an extra appeal.

Stephen Bush @stephenkb.bsky.social · 11h
Yeah, I don't mean this in a 'they are superior to us' way, but I do basically think if you are a billonaire, you are built differently to most people simply because you haven't tapped out.

Stephen Bush @stephenkb.bsky.social · 11h
Particularly in a constituency system - the Republican party has many other pathologies, but it is absolutely *for* traders in Wall Street who are currently a stranded asset because they live in a blue state.
130
Stephen Bush @stephenkb.bsky.social · 11h
And also my point wasn't about elections or voting, like, the "people that a successful centre-right project should want more of" are part of, but by necessity never going to be the whole of the coalition.

Stephen Bush @stephenkb.bsky.social · 11h
The tragedy of it is that they just visibly are not going to go for the big swings that WB often has done, for good and for ill.

Yeah, I think under Ellison, Paramount has had a pretty good streak of 'I enjoyed that in the cinema. I doubt it would hold up at home, but I don't care' movies.

Stephen Bush @stephenkb.bsky.social · 11h
Yeah, this is why I continue to be 'three series and out' is that I just think the idea that 'this year's seven year old will be willing to come back aged 13'...come on now.

I never understood how that show ran for so long. It was so boring. Claire's tedious job. Whatever the hell was going on with whichever Mara it is playing Zoe's performances. Dull, dull, dull.

This is closely linked to why I don't have a billion dollars and never will, but if I had a billion dollars, I would just retire to my modernist mansion and not bother with this nonsense:

Both local parties are very well established, though some of the content of the Greens' leaflets has had a weird 'guy who has just googled Camden and has a lot of tedious received wisdom about elections' air.

I don't know, I maintain that the big challenge with the later books is that 'adapting a children's book about a teenager' hits big problems because on screen the audience goes 'teenagers don't DO that', which doesn't matter on the page.

Stephen Bush @stephenkb.bsky.social · 12h
I basically never watch a TV show that is newly hatched.

I don't watch Slow Horses and thought 'maybe it's just one of the more difficult books to adapt' and then looked, and to be fair I can see how 'a plotline based on the Salisbury murders' is going to struggle to be adapted to 'the world in 2026'.

I am now dreading the idea of a Netflix Casualty, in which the bloke who has failed to properly secure his ladder, the distracted mum on her phone on the school run and the lovable nanna with dementia who's gone to the shops all get four episode character arcs.

I find myself mentally editing stuff as I watch it, could have cut that whole scene, could have come in later, could have left earlier, this is telling us stuff we already know etc. People used to say that TV drama was slower in the 60s and 70s. They don't say it so much anymore.

Yeah this is why I just bounce off so much TV now, I become almost overwhelmed with a desire to start editing it myself.

"modern TV" is like 3 blockbusters which go for 8 seasons, a million passable shows which go for 2 seasons and get killed off for not hitting metrics, a few well-thought-of microseries, and procedurals which started in the early 00s

No, I don't watch very much TV, I'm not going to give my hour a day to a children's show that I don't have nostalgia for.
