I wrote about the thing I underestimated most about progress in AI: its ability to self-organize to accomplish tasks. Also, what that means for agents like Muse and Dots, along with a music video explaining why we keep relearning The Bitter Lesson. open.substack.com/pub/oneusefu...

A great blue heron fishes at sunrise at a nature area in Longmont, Colorado.

In this horizontal color photograph, a great blue heron is silhouetted in left profile in the right half of the frame as it perches on a branch extending from a submerged tree. A silhouetted shoreline forms the background, while out-of-focus cattails and reeds in the foreground frame the heron, adding depth and context to the scene. The pond’s surface reflects the golden-orange hues of the rising sun, accentuating the symmetrical ripples flowing across the water.

A beautiful silhouette portrait of a great blue heron in the warm glow of sunrise, surrounded by the wetland habitat so vital to its survival.

I find photographing flowers very uplifting. When I was younger, doing creative work helped me cope. These days it feels much lighter. (I guess it worked?) Passiflora 'Susan Brigham' under UV light.

Interesting results from first student poll on AI, this is a second year "AI and the Law" class. Small class (optional module capped at 25 students). Unsurprisingly, mostly positive or indifferent to AI, self-selection bias.

I know there is a hell of a lot going on right now. But not all of it is bad. Some is astonishingly good - like the results of this study from June. Cervical cancer is a terribly cruel thing. This might, at long last, be the beginning of the end of it. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

I have been banging on about the lack of a shared responsibility model for AI (similar to that for cloud services) but have never thought it through in detail. Fortunately, @andrewclearwater.bsky.social has done so in this great piece: andrewclearwater.substack.com/p/cloud-alre...

Cloud Already Solved This. AI Governance Should Copy the Answer.
The gap between where AI harm lands and who can prevent it isn’t new. Cloud security closed the same gap by publishing the split of responsibilities, and AI governance should do the same.

That Tree. Early in my reconnection with photography and my first digital camera I shot the Wānaka tree. Sadly these days it possesses less limbs than in this image, but continues to sit proudly in the water. The LE image was taken in the last light of the day. #photography

Just finished 'This is how you lose the time war' (really good), looked it up on Wikipedia and found ... this.
Screenshot from Wikipedia article:

In May 2023, three years after its release, This Is How You Lose the Time War received an unexpected boost in popularity, ascending Amazon's bestseller rankings to number three overall and number one in science fiction.[19] This was because of a series of viral tweets by a fan of the manga series Trigun with the display name "bigolas dickolas wolfwood" who recommended the book to their followers.[20] In response, El-Mohtar wrote "I do not understand what is happening but I am incomprehensibly grateful to bigolas dickolas".[21] "Wolfwood" was subsequently nominated for the 2024 Hugo Award for Best Related Work for their tweets, but declined to appear on the ballot.

Why are the AI agent incidents less of a security and more of an alignment issue? Sure, it’s critical that AI labs implement better security controls to contain AI agents. It’s bad that AI agents *can* break containment, hack other websites and collude with others.

The @stsci.edu posted this JWST image from 2023 earlier today—and I had to do the same. This is only a portion (about 50 lightyears across) of the Milky Way's centre. In this view, there's an estimated half-million stars. In our night sky, at a dark site, humans can see ~2,000 stars unaided.
From the source: "In a field crowded with stars, a funnel-shaped region of space appears darker than its surroundings with fewer stars. It is wider at the top edge of the image, narrowing towards the bottom. Toward the narrow end of this dark region a small clump of red and white appears to shoot out streamers upward and left. A large, bright cyan-colored area surrounds the lower portion of the funnel-shaped dark area, forming a rough U shape. The cyan-coloured area has needle-like, linear structures and becomes more diffuse in the center of the image. The right side of the image is dominated by clouds of orange and red, with a purple haze."
