For the first time since I started working for the National Park I visited Spiekeroog. Why haven't I gone there before? Because the salt marshes amomg the most natural we have! 🤩 No need to improve any management decisions. Just lean back an let nature do the work 👍

LiegendDemo Oldenburg @liegenddemo-oldenb.bsky.social · 24/04/2026

Happy #WorldRewildingDay! The Lower Saxon Wadden Sea National Park's motto has been 'let nature be nature' for 40 years. We now also focus on actively restoring natural processes to salt marshes which have been affected by articial drainage ditches, e.g. through topsoil removal.
A salt marsh restoration site where restoration is in progress. We see a large area of open soil. It's muddy and there are some puddles. At the edges there are large heaps of sediment which has been removed. These will be taken away later. We see a restored salt marsh. There is a meandering salt marsh creek filled with some water. On the right side of the creek pioneer vegetation has established. On the left side there is an open mudflat area.A closer look at the salt marsh shows a very small creek whcih as formed naturally. The edges are covered by glasswort / Salicornia europea. The picture was taken close to the ground, so the small plants appear almost like a dense forest along a mudder river.
