Spending a very hot day in the field yesterday with team ANK (National Park & @rptu.bsky.social ), marking the first monitoring plots for project KoNaS-WK 🚩🔨🤩 www.nationalpark-wattenmeer.de/wissensbeitr...
A group of researchers standing in a grassland. Some are carrying equipment like a metal detector and marking sticks. The sky is blue and almost everyone looks like it's too hot outside.A group of cows is standing in a grassland. A researcher is knwwling down in front of the cows. The approach the person curiously. For the first time since I started working for the National Park I visited Spiekeroog. Why haven't I gone there before? Because the salt marshes amomg the most natural we have! 🤩 No need to improve any management decisions. Just lean back an let nature do the work 👍

Happy #WorldRewildingDay! The Lower Saxon Wadden Sea National Park's motto has been 'let nature be nature' for 40 years. We now also focus on actively restoring natural processes to salt marshes which have been affected by articial drainage ditches, e.g. through topsoil removal.
A salt marsh restoration site where restoration is in progress. We see a large area of open soil. It's muddy and there are some puddles. At the edges there are large heaps of sediment which has been removed. These will be taken away later. We see a restored salt marsh. There is a meandering salt marsh creek filled with some water. On the right side of the creek pioneer vegetation has established. On the left side there is an open mudflat area.A closer look at the salt marsh shows a very small creek whcih as formed naturally. The edges are covered by glasswort / Salicornia europea. The picture was taken close to the ground, so the small plants appear almost like a dense forest along a mudder river.

Happy World Wetlands Day! I'm very proud to be able to contribute to the protection of ~10k ha of salt marshes in the Lower Saxon Wadden Sea National Park with my work. They are a very valuable habitat for plants and animal species, and important carbon sink. #WorldWetlandsDay #WWD2026 #Wetlands

It is low tide, so there are some mudflats visible in the creek. the creek banks are vegetated with a tall grass typical for salt marshes. Two people stand in the background looking at the creek.

It's migratory bird days at the Wadden Sea! Today I joined the team at the tower in Varel. Let's see whether we can spot as many species as last year 🤞😎

A fun day on Langeoog island today 😎 with three students from Greifswald University. They will collect data for their dissertation projects, which will help us make some management decisions 🤝

I finally managed to visit one of our most interesting saltmarsh restoration sites: the Langwarder Groden. The site is a combination of two restoration methods: opening a small seawall and topsoil removal. Very popular with both wildlife and tourists due to an accessible boardwalk 🐥🦭📸🚶‍♂️🚶‍♀️👨‍🦽

It's biodiversity day in our National Park. Today we're on the island Wangerooge. Let's see how many different species we can find in a day 🦆🦭🦋🐌🐞🌷🌾🌿

Happy #WorldSaltmarshDay! 🌊🌾🥳 Salt marshes are an important habitat for plants & animals and also help protect the climate and the coast! I loved salt marshes since my first project in 2008 💙. Now I'm responsible for the management of +8400ha in the Lower Saxon Wadden Sea National Park.

Excited to be in sunny Hamburg today 😎 we are meeting with colleagues to discuss the projects in the framework of the 'Federal Action Plan on Nature-based Solutions for Climate and Biodiversity' on the coast. Stay tuned for more news soon!

Spotted one of our temporary electric fences in the field this week. These are put up by our #nationalpark rangers to protect breeding birds 🐣 in the #saltmarsh from predators ⛔🦊 It's also easy to see we had a very dry spring...

Good luck! 🤞 A trip to the Dongtan salt marshes on Chongming island (close to Shanghai) in 2016 led me to start working on plastic pollution in coastal wetlands. I am hoping it already looks better there than it did 7 years ago.
