every person I've ever talked to who says they love Flanagan also says that they don't like horror movies/shows in general, and I don't think that's a coincidence. He makes horror for people who don't like horror.

I can hate Flanagan's adaptations for their general bastardization of the original as well as the crypto-conservatism and nuclear family propaganda he continually sneaks in. I contain multitudes. Also, I sat through Hill House, Bly Manor, and Midnight Mass, so I am not unfamiliar with what he does.

there was a tumblr post going around positing that Flanagan isn't fucking these texts up by accident, he's consciously choosing classic horror novels that are critical of the nuclear family/women's roles in society in order to "fix" them and I'm not NOT convinced at this point.

I think that's a misunderstanding of what motivates mass shooters. Most were not the bullying victims lashing out, the way they've been portrayed. They are angry, entitled, and feel like they are owed notoriety.

on god this trend is why my next novel involves the protagonist convinced her mother was murdered and ends up learning that no, it actually was suicide, sometimes parents die by suicide and you can't reconcile that.

this is a very thoughtful and nuanced piece. i think this paragraph is especially important to keep in mind. a lot of people are talking about geller as if he has spent the last ten years doing his best to atone for what he did, or asking if ten years of "good work" can outweigh one rape.

Regardless of whether or not you believe that rapists should not have to disclose their histories of sexual violence to their co-workers, I don't think Geller should have agreed to collaborate with me - especially for a video about James Franco - knowing that I've often written about living as a survivor of sexual violence (which I assume he knew because he knew of me and it was the subject of my most popular essay). I feel as though I was a small link in a larger chain of survivors used - deliberately or not - as props in a greater project of image rehabilitation. Every collaboration Geller did with an outspoken victim of sexual assault helped to legitimize his public image, and it seems none of us were given the choice of making an informed decision whether or not to support that project. While it's possible that Geller has deconstructed, his actions don't align with the argument that he's spent the last decade "accounting."

Peaches came to us at the end of May after 13 hard years on the street. His time outside definitely showed, he was in horrendous shape and weighed 5
Ibs of mostly fleas. Since then, we have been managing his various conditions. He's dealt with anemia, congestion, gastric ulcers, kidney disease, horrible dental disease... the list goes on. We've been slowly chipping away at these issues and he was actually starting to feel pretty good! A couple weeks ago, he started backsliding and I've been trying to figure him out. This weekend, it became clear he was declining and what I was doing at home wasn't enough, so I had to admit him to the hospital.
Peaches is dealing with an infection, dehydration, another gastric ulcer, pretty awful congestion and a mild hit to his kidneys. Thankfully, after 24 hrs of fluids, he's showing improvement. Through all of this, he continues to have the loudest purr and best headbutts for everyone who helps him
I feel hopeful that we can get Peaches back on track and give him more time to feel loved and cherished, something he missed out on for his first 13 years of life. If you're able to pitch in $1 or $5 toward his care, we would all appreciate it more than you know.
Everyone who has met this little guy knows how special he is and how much he wants to stick around
