I had a great time talking with David Shuck about my thoughts on the Reimagining IES report and the current moment. In case you're interested in my rambling thoughts - here they are: www.educationprogress.org/p/whats-left...

#Education #IES My team received the message from IES that our March 2025 Training Grant Proposal will not be reviewed. But that made me think: what happened to the September 2024 grant submissions? Did you submit a September 2024 IES grant of any sort? Was yours scored? Did you get funded?

I didn't know the RFI responses were out - but if I did, I would have wanted to summarize them - but Betsy did the work for us!! This is a great summary - and suggests a lot of shared support for IES by practitioners and researchers. #Education

Trump Gutted IES. Skepticism of Its Renewal Abounds.
The Education Department recently requested ideas on how to “modernize” the data collection and education research funding agency, and it sought to hire for a few positions.

Or like as in "crash test dummy" - which stands in for a person. This is all to say, the word "dummy" can be used in a derogatory way, but that was not the original intent in this case (or many others).

Beth Tipton @statstipton.bsky.social · 10/07/2025
I think the definition of dummy that is probably closest to how they are used is "something that imitates the real thing but isn't functional," as in these variables stand in for the the real variables, but aren't the real variables. (In British English, pacifiers are called dummies.)

Bah and I should've mentioned AERA Open means the article is open access so anyone can read and I didn't have to pay for color so you get to see the wonderful figures I toiled over as I intended!
Screenshot of figure 2, the Percentage of Articles that Used at Least One Racial Category Over Time by Journal. Each journal is listed along the y-axis (AERA Open, American Educational Research Journal, Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis, Educational Researcher, and Journal of Educational and Behavioral Statistics). The publication year of articles is across the x-axis (2009 to 2019).

The 0% to 10% range is shown in yellow, with the color gradient transitioning to green tones after 10%, followed by a transition to blue and then purple tones at 50% and above. The darkest purple tone indicates that 100% of articles in that journal in that timeframe included racial categories. In AERA Open, which began publishing in 2015, consistently more than 50% of its articles used a racial category. This was similar for both AERJ and EEPA. We can visually observe the increase in the proportion of ER articles using racial categories over time with the cells between 2009 and 2011 being more of a yellow-greenish hue and the articles between 2016 and 2019 having a purple hue. In contrast, JEBS decreased its share of articles that use racial categories, with cells between 2009 and 2013 having a greenish hue compared with articles after 2014 generally being yellow. In 2009, 18% of JEBS articles used any racial category, and this decreased to 8% by 2019.

This is a great thread and a question I've wondered about a lot. In MA, we see some studies report 10 ES and others only 1 or 2. Presumably those reporting 1 or 2 collected more and are choosing to report only these? But what is the general mechanism?

I wouldn't say he invented the t-test, so much as he discovered that a test (which we now call the t-test) follows a t-distribution (which he discovered). Later a variety of other tests were found to also follow this t-distribution (including the paired sample t-test).

#StatsSky Something I keep mulling over: Statistics, as a field, started with a focus on social science / welfare (unfortunately, i.e., eugenics) but now has largely ejected social statistics from the "core" of the field. Instead, it is researched and taught within social science depts. Why?

Keep thinking about this. Why don't we have a similar "total experiment error" framework as a default setting for inference from social science experiments? Oftentimes we pretend all we need to account for is sampling error even though we know our measurements, treatments, etc. are full of error.
