In Command at E3 1998: Westwood Studio and Dune 2000's demo booth, as sufficiently grungy as the game's UI itself. One of my favourite remasters in all but name. And very cool to see it presented like this. 💿: PC-X December 1998 (IA)

An 800x600 res photo of an elaborate booth and demo setup with a cyberpunky bare metal and circuitry chair, grungy metal plating and monitor chasis and screens giving you the vibes of something you'd sit in in-universe. Someone's sat in it with their hand on the mouse in by the CRT monitor.

With today being World Mental Health day I just wanted to say a few things. 1. It's ok to not be ok - If you're feeling bad, you're not a burden for it. 2. There is no shame in needing/taking antidepressants to cope. If they work for you that's great! 3. Talk about how you feel with your friends

Also related to the CrossWorlds news, I realize that with there being an arcade version in the wings, and looking at the rendering closely and noticing what could be a IC card reader... could we see Sonic-themed Aime cards?

A bit of a story: I will admit, ever since I got into games, I've played plenty of older stuff in additon to newer titles. Not because of nostalgia, but out of a love and genuine interest for them. It's neat to discover the history of them and how they can influence other titles in history (1/?)

Someone just reblogged this on tumblr with this tag and I just fucking died I've been on this shit for over a decade and it's only getting worse

kayinnasaki

written about this before but whatever.

Videogames as an artform have a problem with nostalgia. Not that people shouldn’t have nostalgia. Or that games shouldn’t draw from the past. But instead the weight we give to nostalgia.

When people go back to enjoy old games, we assume it’s a nostalgia thing. Do people assume that with books? Or movies? Or music? People certainly do go back in time with those mediums for nostalgia! It happens! I know when my sister is listening to certain cheesy old boyband pop or punk she’s often having a musical nostalgia trip! That’s cool! But we still don’t ASSUME, CONSTANTLY thats why people go back to stuff.

People like old stuff because it’s cool and interesting. It’s historic. People go watch Metropolis still, but how many people alive could even be nostalgic for a movie like that?

I almost want to see the word Nostalgia excised from discussions about video games – not because nostalgia is bad but because we over use it to the point where it’s actually harmful I think.

I mean I made IWBTG and am making an NES style game right now and even for me, the obsession with ‘nostalgia’ seems crazy.

Old stuff is cool. I know this because I see a lot of you kids on my tumblr feed talking about games I know you didn’t grow up with. It’s like finding your parents record or CD collection. Thinking the primary greatness of old games is bringing back memories of eating cereal and playing games on a saturday morning is a great injustice, even if those memories for some are perfectly worthwhile things.

The legend itself - the Sphere 360, sibling to the SpaceOrb, licensed for the PS1 by ASCIIware. It's a six axis controller released for the PlayStation right around when Sony was messing around with a dual stick kind of gamepad thing...hmm well I'm sure things will work out great let's look at 1/?

a beaten up box for the sphere 360 controller, it's grey and has a decent amount of text about the controller, a LARGE PS1 official licensed product is visible.

The final poster with text for MBTAnimal's Orange Line Furride! (transitanimals.org) #furryart #mbtanimals #transitanimals And my WIP rough sketches :3 I'm delighted they let me go with the cat train instead of a plain ol regular train haha

Text says "Orange Line Fur-Ride, October 4th 2026". A cheery orange subway train jumps over a railroad bridge! It has a cute face, cat ears, and paws. A cat train conductor can be seen inside. A river runs underneath the bridge, with sailboats and kayaks visible. Beyond that is the skyline of the city of Boston.

A sketch of that poster, rough and in all black and white.

3 sketches of possible poster compositions, all showing the scene from different angles.

it's good to see this laid out clearly, but i'm once again going to point to Peter Naur's 1985 essay "Programming as Theory Building"

The present discussion is a contribution to the understanding of what programming is. It suggests that programming properly should be regarded as an activity by which the programmers form or achieve a certain kind of insight, a theory, of the matters at hand. This suggestion is in contrast to what appears to be a more common notion, that programming should be regarded as a production of a program and certain other texts.

Hightailing it into a New Dimension in 1996: Bubsy 3D. Despite its reputation, Bubsy 3D is not *that* terrible a game, and there are far worse platformers from the time. And it had the misfortune of coming out shortly after the release of Mario 64 in North America and lateish-1997 in Europe.

A magazine ad for Bubsy 3D, with a render of the grinning and winking pantsless bobcat surrounded by cartoonish animals, gameplay screenshots above him and quite a bit of praise from mags of the time.
