WIPWednesday! Finally working on chap 3 of my Postcanon modern #jayvik fic! I know I had done work on it earlier this year, but I am scrapping what I had. It makes no sense to me and was not going into the direction I want, and now that I feel better than I did my first attempt, I am trying again.

As wakefulness returned to him, Viktor found solace in the fact that his jolt had not roused Jayce. The man beside him remained in slumber, however restless it might be. Viktor could see the hints of nightmare on the other man's face, brows knitted in serious contemplation of the horror that only he could see.

Viktor reached over, hand hovering over Jayce's face for a moment in nervous hesitation. It had barely been three months since they came to this world, and neither one of them had avoided the topic of who they were to one another. Still, he couldn't leave the man that had been his closest confidant for the better part of seven years to remain in suffering, and Viktor took the moment to sooth where he could. Dexterous hands caressed the tanned skin of Jayce's face, a thumb brushing against a cheekbone as the hair of Jayce's beard tickled Viktor's palm.

He watched as the tension faded from Jayce's face, a calmer sleep claiming him as his breathing evened out. Once Viktor knew that Jayce would finally rest, he pulled away, carefully grabbing his crutch and moving slowly and quietly out of the room.

He would worry about his brace later. For now, Viktor would simply take care to monitor his movements to avoid his leg from buckling out from under him.

Learning how to live with his leg again had been like riding a bike- he never really forgot, though Viktor found the comparison ironic. It hadn't been like he would have managed the task of operating one in the first place- his body would have never allowed it.

In the quiet hours of the early sun, Viktor soon sat contemplating his life in the chair that faced the sliding glass door to the outside world. A cup of coffee sat steaming before him, forgotten as he remained lost in his thoughts. The outside world remained closed off to him, of an exile of Viktor's own making. He couldn't risk the people that had made their lives there, not when he was still so unsure if the Hexcore still stirred within him

WIP for some #Jayvik chapter 5 medical angst for my post canon modern. Slowly getting myself back into the swing of things so I can finally get myself back into working on chapter 3. Maybe it will cooperate once I start it back up.

The hour ticked by a snails pace, the only indication of the time of day. Still, even if there had been windows, the dimmed room would not have been illuminated as the minutes crept into the nighttime hours.

The small room remained illuminated by the screens of a couple of monitors- one tracking the jagged green lines still keeping a heightened pace as they monitored Viktor's overworking heart, the other the nurses workstation that sat in silence as it waited for the next check in.

A soft, weary groan sounded over the din of the chaos past the doors, and it snapped Jayce out of the worried cacophony of his mind. He looked down, seeing his partner facing him, gold eyes fighting to stay open.

Jayce wanted nothing more than to tell Viktor to try and stay awake, but he knew that the body before him had already been through an overwhelming challenge that had only just begun.

Reaching out to brush sweat-soaked strands of hair from Viktor's face, Jayce tried to give a reassuring smile.

It never reached his eyes.

"You need rest, Viktor." he said softly, unable to mask the overwhelming concern in his voice. "It's okay. I'll be here."

Viktor gave a weak nod, too fatigued to force words out as he finally let his eyes slip closed. It seemed like it was only a matter of moments before exhaustion claimed him. The ragged breaths, however, did little to slow or even out, and Jayce knew that what little sleep would be pained.

How willing Viktor was to comply to the concept of rest scared Jayce.

Even in the twilight of his illness, Viktor had locked himself in the lab, desperate to use his work to save his own life. Jayce knew that, the hastily scrawled notes he had flipped through to keep Viktor from bleeding out was filled with notes of the care the smaller man had forgone to persue his work.

Now, in this new world, as Viktor's lungs threatened to cut his life short once more, Jayce worried that his partner was quietly giving in to death's embrace.

"You can't let go."
