Why aren’t there kid’s bike/MIPS helmets with a legionnaire’s flap for neck sun protection? I cannot be the first or only person to think of this. Wearing a sunhat under is possible but not really great, uncomfortable and hot?

Make sure you eat them ripe though. A ripe persimmon is concerning: it should be so soft that you worry it will fall apart in your hands or if you poke it a little too hard with a fingertip. Anything less and they are fibrous and paste-y in the mouth.

One of the minor miracles of modern aviation is that people can routinely make use of air travel without ever having to consider that wind exists. Incredible.

A procedurally generated Islamic geometric tile mosaic: a seamless repeating pattern of interlocking twelve-pointed stars separated by polygonal tiles. The strapwork is drawn as pale ribbons that weave over and under at each crossing, set over glazed compartments in washed blues on indigo, in the manner of Nasrid Granada.

Me I want a ceiling gantry system for my living room with an end effector for manipulating fabric to create a laundry sorter-and-folder 👕👔 I’m fine with it working slowly — would happily tolerate ~12h service if it meant waking up to folded clothes.

For a vivid example: Captain James Cook was 1 of 8, of whom 3 total survived to adulthood. Capt Cook managed to sail from England to make first European contact with Hawaii, where he was killed at 51; he had 6 children. His children each died at 31, 16, 4, <1, <1, 17. He has no descendants today.

Reminder: the reason why average life expectancy used to be 30 wasn't because nobody lived longer, but because until recently half of everyone ever born died before puberty ourworldindata.org/child-mortal...
ourworldindata.org
Mortality in the past: every second child died
The chances that a newborn survives childhood have increased from 50% to 96% globally. How do we know about the mortality of children in the past? And what can we learn from it for our future?

Wooden tools crafted by Neanderthals at hunting sites have been found before. For the first time, there's now evidence from a domestic context too. “We know what was happening in the kitchen, in the sleeping areas,” says @iphes-cerca.bsky.social's M. The Icelandic chain Maika'i is so interesting—why did they pick a Hawaiian word for their name? It’s like a weird tie back to where I was born. I’m gonna open a breakfast place in Hawaii and call it Frábært just to mess with people.

Today, an ESE wind peaking at 28 knots sustained (14 m/s), gusting 41 knots (21 m/s), with the peak wind force expected exactly at the scheduled takeoff time of our airplane. It’s hard not to take it personally— like Iceland itself is also against us leaving.

There’s a certain magic to Iceland — not the natural beauty per se, moreso that certain aspects of Iceland may choose to reveal themselves to you, or not, depending. We had that magic this time. The weather was great the whole way through. We were lucky in several ways, with people and events.

Starting to acclimate us to jetlag, last night I took 4yo to Vatnaveröld (“Water World”) in Keflavík and we swam and splashed until 21:30 closing time. Very proud to see 4yo hit the high-water-mark of being able to play with several other groups of children while speaking only Icelandic.

We leave Iceland today—4yo is completely miserable about it and does NOT want to leave. He made a deal with one of his friends that he could sleep under the other’s bed and then let me know that I could fly home by myself because he would prefer to stay in Iceland 😢

Svona ruglingur er að miklu leyti það sem ég tel mig þurfa að bæta í íslenskunni minni, en það er ekki ljóst hvernig ég get fengið þá endurgjöf sem ég þarf. Kannski myndi það hjálpa að vita hvernig aðrir sem lærðu að tala góða íslensku komust frá miðstigi yfir á hátt stig.
