On some level, my heartbreak with Ai is because I think learning things makes you a more thoughtful, nuanced, experienced person. With a larger number of problems overcome, and a larger toolbox available for thinking through problems. I think it’s bad for all of us if we stop challenging ourselves 🤷‍♂️

My most conservative take, at least in Canada : you get really good tax breaks for donating to charities and you’re actively redirecting money away from the federal government to wherever you want. That’s a value-based way you can affect the world around you, by directing funds at your discretion.

Things move so quickly these days, it’s easy to forget what a tour de force #ArcaneNetflix was. Although it felt like it was 3 seasons worth of material, every POV in the series had a profound transformation, with dialogue, scene choice and animation that stretched the medium. I’m humbled.

Just finished Stephen Baxter’s The Thousand Earths. Fantastic big ideas, but the moment to moment experience was so depressing. It was hard to jump back into day to day. On to Chaos Vector, Megan E O’Keefe second in a trilogy. Quite enjoyed the first.

While defending the luddite argument in Discord, I stumbled into this IMO succinct explanation for opposing generative AI: At every step in the process, it impoverishes us.

AI impoverishes us at every step of the process:
- data centers pollute our environment
- energy use drives up costs
- content theft robs creators of income
- the actual output is used to displace workers and depress wages
- using it harms our mental health and impairs our competence
- the flood of AI slop is damaging our sociopolitical landscape

All in service of making a worse product - and world - to enrich a handful of already spectacularly wealthy people
