Honestly, for all I know, the original authors have clauses in their contracts that grant them a royalty on adaptations as well as the original print novel. In which case, good! They should be getting paid more for the added use of their work to generate income for the IP holder.

It's worth noting that I don't feel I'm missing out. I'm decently compensated; the time spent negotiating & managing royalties would likely wind up costing as much as I'd make with royalty payments, not to mention that if I was getting royalties on adaptation work, the original author should be too.

Aw, thanks! It was a TON of work (I thought Daria Rhodes, our letterer, was going to throttle me because of how complicated it made their job) but the epistolary format is such a fascinating aspect the book & I hate that it's left out of most adaptations.

Publishing deals are easier if the book doesn't come with complications like royalty payments, and it gives Disney flexibility to change their publishing plans as opportunities come up. Webtoons wasn't part of our initial discussion, for example, but we've reached a great audience on that platform.

I didn't learn about the Webtoons deal until after I'd finished the script, which was a bit frustrating, because pacing & layout design for Webtoons is pretty different from a print manga and I would have made some different choices had I known, but such is work-for-hire life.

I love it so so much! 😍 I get the funding stuff that led to the show's casting, and even the rationale for keeping the visualization of the character consistent with the show for the new GN, but it's also so exhausting to watch progress on representation get stalled over and over again.

Same, but this was in reference to the graphic novel that's being developed. Skarsgard is a fine actor but imo not a good fit for the role, but I also realize they wouldn't have gotten funding without him so 🤷‍♀️

Careful what you wish for - I've met some 85 year olds who've regressed to their childhood (mentally) and it seems to suck even worse than the normal 85 experience.
