Once more, statistically, the mother in this (I'm sure totally true) story would be in the safest possible human company if completely surrounded by trans people. Certainly my experience would suggest their company would have been kinder than that of their child...

A girl won the role of Seymour in South Grand Prairie High School in Texas. Then, the district freaked out because of Texas' anti-trans and anti-gay law. So they tried to strip her role and give it to a boy. She refused, so now they are cancelling the play. Subscribe to support our journalism.

Texas School Kills ‘Little Shop Of Horrors’ After Girl Cast As Seymour, Citing Anti-LGBTQ+ Law
Following backlash, the school gave one young actress’s role to a boy—and told her to share the role of Audrey with another girl as consolation. Then they cancelled it altogether.

These are wonderfully effective tools to hold up against the claims of nationalists (especially as they may be authoritarians or Fascists instrumentalizing nationalism) as a litmus test - are we in rational conversation land, or are we in the place of nostalgic fee-fees?

1. Nations are objectively modern despite claims to antiquity 2. The formal universality of nationality vs the particular & unique nature of its practice 3. The political power of nationalisms vs. their philosophical poverty and even incoherence. (Anderson, Imagined Communities, 2006, p5)

Benedict Anderson's take on nationalism is getting dated but it's still pretty important. One of my favourite little bits in the book is his quiet brutality in introducing the concept of nationalism. He names three paradoxes inherent to nationalism:

As a former civil servant, I would’ve been mortified if any error made it into an official document I helped draft, because accuracy *is* the job. The continued use of AI in government is an admission that governments no longer care about accuracy. It‘s shockingly contemptuous of the public.
