Star Wars has always been obsessed with mentor-mentee relationships ("do or do not," "trust the force," etc). But Andor is specifically about different ways of running a lab, and how they all go wrong.
A chart titled "Models of lab governance: the Andor guide," comparing two fictional lab leaders—Lio Partagaz and Luthen Rael—from the Andor TV series. The chart mimics academic lab structures using their leadership styles:

Lio Partagaz: Regular lab meetings, side collaborations encouraged, abundant public funding, focus on minimum publishable units, collective success/failure metrics.

Luthen Rael: One-on-one meetings, PI dictates research topics, funded by a shadowy private benefactor, pursues high-risk moonshots, PI aims to elevate successful students and “kill” weak ones.

No question, but I’d say be skeptical of any hype surrounding “sustainable” deep sea mining…. Those nodules are little islands of life in the deep sea desert, as the minerals in them support life in an otherwise relatively inert landscape. And once they’re gone they’re gone for good.

‘We had the same moral panic about TV’ is a common refrain when people bring up social media, but like, in terms of social-political impacts, it’s hard to not see the ‘moral panic’ about TV as at least partially vindicated! A reality TV star is president! He’s filling his admin with Fox News hosts!

Once again, the main goal of Trump's tariffs is soliciting bribery. That is why all who go looking for a coherent (if misguided) economic strategy that aims to benefit the country come away confused. Make manufacturing boom? Stop fentanyl? Generate revenue to replace income tax? Nope. Corruption.

🚨 Practical URGENT tip for NSF grantees: Out of an abundance of caution, I would right now go into Research.gov and… 1. Download your NSF award letters. 2. Print PDF your annual reports. 3. Screenshot the status table for annual reports. NSF is planning maintenance tomorrow to Research.gov
Due to maintenance, Research.gov (including access to NSF-PAR, GRFP, PES, and ETAP) will be unavailable from Fri., 4/25 at 10:00 PM ET to Sat., 4/26 at 1:00 PM ET. NSF apologizes for any inconvenience.

Before there were trains there was ship autism
Maréchal Pinard @skankstank64
yfw plane/train autism existed in ancient greece but it was with ships instead
25. Thrasyllus of the deme of Aexone suffered a strange new form of madness. He left the city and went down to live at the Piraeus. He imagined that all the ships coming into harbour there were his own. He made a list of them, attended when they departed once more, and was delighted when they returned safely to the harbour. For a long time he continued to suffer from this mania. But his brother, returning from Sicily, handed him over to a doctor to be cured, and in this way he recovered from the illness.
He often recalled his mad hobby and used to say that he had never been so happy as when he rejoiced at the sight of ships which did not belong to him returning safely, 45

A Border Patrol official arrested a 19 yo citizen from Albuquerque in Arizona who didn’t have ID on him, claimed he ‘admitted’ to illegally crossing the border, abducted + ICE imprisoned him for 10 days, and would have deported him to Mexico if his family hadn’t tracked him down and provided his ID.
His girlfriend’s aunt Grace Layva says she and her family made numerous calls looking for him before they found out he was being detained in the Florence Correctional Center, which Immigration and Customs Enforcement uses to detain people.

Another family member drove to the detention center, about 70 miles northwest of Tucson, but said officials wouldn’t provide any information or release him.

ICE did not respond to a request for comment about the wrongful detention.

The family later provided officials with his birth certificate and social security card.

“He did say he was a U.S. citizen, but they didn't believe him,” Layva said. “I think they would have kept him. I think they would have if they would have not got that information yesterday in the court and gave that to ICE and the Border Patrol. He probably would have been deported already to Mexico.”
