At the same time, big increases in wealth inequality. Top income decile saw their net worth go up 31%, while everyone else had fairly undramatic shifts.

As expected, income inequality somewhat decreased in the last 3 years, with the real income of the top quintile decreasing while everyone else saw real increases.

“clicking around on websites that have existed for 8 years is a natural part of the human experience“ is one of the worst arguments against using AI I have ever heard, and that’s saying something. 99+% of the humans who ever lived have never done anything like it www.hottakes.space/p/a-slow-ced...
This brings us to the latest trend we’re being pushed: to use AI agents to do simple tasks that are already convenient and frequently enjoyable like book a flight, hotel or dinner reservation, things like this. These tasks are easily accomplished on the web right now, today. They take seconds, sometimes a minute or two, and have interfaces designed for the specific task. Unless you’re under duress, or simply do not care where you sleep or how you travel, a trip for instance should take a small amount of time and consideration, that’s good. You want to look at photos, read reviews, daydream a bit …act, you know, human. A voice or chat interface is in my opinion inferior to visually seeing all options (not just options the AI decides to show) presented in one window, with another window for your own research or context. As an adult I have a workstation with two monitors, plenty of screen real estate. I do not require an infantilized view, and since I am not cognitively impaired also do not require a machine to make decisions for me.

increasing numbers of things are going to increasingly polarize into two main directions: moar computer or anti-computer. a lot of thought is being put into how to make things moar computer, but less into how to make things anti-computer. but there's a big future in anti-computer.

In anticipation of a future I pray will never come, I've written the following. Yes, even in tragedy, there is hope... mine is that this poem will heal the wounds that divide us. It is called "Elegy; or, The Fall".
ELEGY; or, The Fall

Down, down, our Titan fell,
Hands stretched outward through the air.
Behind him streaked a comet's tail,
A burning trail of flaxen hair.

A crowd of cooks around him swept
To catch his body as he flew,
But mortal hands to flesh divine
The firmest grasp they cannot do.
The finger tips grazed by the cloth
Of navy jacket, crimson tie.
They struggled for a place to hold,
But found no purchase for the try.

His head lurched forward, jutting out,
And aimed, it seemed, toward the oil
That bubbled in a fryolator.
Fate set its arc, our dreams to foil.

A deaf'ning roar erupted then.
A rush of liquid spurted high.
The boiling splashes struck the walls
With bits of flesh and bits of fry.
For blocks around, a cry was heard,
A mighty bellow, deep and proud.
A tear was pulled from every eye.
"Our Titan!" wailed each voice aloud.

That mane of hair, the shade of gold,
Bobbed limply in the basket's foam.
A cashier spoke, "Lord, if you hear me,
Guide our mighty Titan home."

A ring of workers, some as young
As sixteen, which the law allows,
Encircled there and touched his back,
And wept beneath their lowered brows. Then broke apart the sobbing crowd.
The manager, whose shift was done,
Stepped forth and said, "Remark this ground
For on it lies our holy one."

That golden sheen now wet with oil
Atop his head was aptly chose,
For high above, upon the roof,
Two arches of its color rose.

And with it, rising, light as air,
A spirit that could never die.
To Heaven, to be too their King
Look now! O! How our Titan flies!

the trajectory we’re on is that computation just happens a lot more. a lot more of the energy output of our civilization will go to computation. everything we do will be accompanied by more and more computation. could be bad! and yet computation itself is not taken seriously as a material phenomenon

I would like to live in the world of this poem, in which every essay assignment is an opportunity to broaden one's horizons instead of a piece of tedious busywork assigned to meet some quota. It's important to write for the sheer joy of it instead of just offloading it to AI, but come on. Really?

If you want to know why Jews are suspicious of you when you're just trying to be a well-meaning antizionist gentile, consider that these two things were written by the same man, Guangtian Ha, a (currently suspended) religion professor at Haverford
a passage from an article by guangtian ha that reads:

We make this call amidst growing concern about antisemitism on our campus. Questions have arisen in the context of a number of specific situations, including external influences from Lower Merion, from donors, and from some alumni who are hell-bent on defining the " ways to be Jewish. This, of course, flies in the face of thousands of years of Jewish tradition which is fundamentally based on interrogation, questioning, and truth-seeking. We take these attacks on our anti-Zionist Jewish community members seriously and we understand the real damage the state of Israel causes for the entire Jewish world when it claims to be acting on behalf of all Jews while engaging in horrific atrocities that - truth be told- mirror some of the worst stereotypes of Jews that have been a part of European racism for centuries. We will be clear: antisemitism should be unacceptable at Haverford, but the energy and consideration which some in our administration have granted these bad faith actors suggests otherwise.a passage from a court document about guangtian ha that reads:

In or about January 2026, through in or about February 2026, defendant GUANGTIAN HA, using X account "America IstLM" posted a series of threatening and harassing messages directed at Victim 1, including the following:
a. "Jew, get the fuck out of my country"
b. "Jew pig, get the fuck out of Lower Merion"
c. "If jews are so special then they should also be placed in special camps and receive special treatments"
d. "LM jews are going to have it big time, jew. Remember this. You scums have had it too easy. Goyim are taking America back, blood-guzzling demons."

Sometimes my wife and I like to send each other text messages as though they’re democratic fundraising messages, and I believe she has produced the jewel of the form.
, it's
and I
have some personal news to share with you.
Being a mom is one of the greatest joys of my life, and I feel deeply that we should have salad tonight
This year has been challenging in many ways, and I have immense gratitude for the kindness and support of family, community, and people like you who have continued to stand by me through everything. It means the world, and I wanted you to be among the first to know that squash is in the oven and kale is in the fridge. As many of you are aware, ve been navigating one of the most challenging periods of my day while waiting for dinner.
Facing baseless federal hunger brought on by not eating since lunch, fighting for the working kids of this country, and now caring for a mean toddler and helping him grow up in a world that isn't always easy. But it has also reminded me exactly why I do this work and who I do it for.
I will never stop working to eat dinner. I will never stop fighting for what is right, even when there is also some feta in the fridge. And I will never stop being so very thankful that you are by my side in this important work and that there is tahini in the pantry for dressing
With love and gratitude,
stop to end
