What a fucking world where I find myself writing letters like this to my MP.
Letter to my MP:

Dear Fleur Anderson,

I am writing regarding the shocking scenes of masked far-right thugs blocking ports in Dover and, somehow more shockingly, forcing a Portsmouth RNLI station to close.

These scenes are horrific. Equally horrific is the rhetoric from some MPs and the press that these people have "reasonable concerns".

Just Stop Oil protestors have been swiftly stopped and arrested. The crux of their campaign is to ensure that the planet remains in a condition that is livable for humans. The existential threat of climate change is one of the most reasonable concerns one can imagine. Yet they were arrested and decried in the press.

Protestors opposing the genocide in Gaza have been equally swiftly arrested, with some even being proscribed as terrorist organisations. For opposing an ongoing genocide that has killed over 69,000 people - including 17,000 children - according to The British Red Cross. Stopping this appalling violence is another incredibly reasonable concern. Yet they are arrested and decried in the press, while others are proscribed as terrorists.

Preventing saving the lives of desperate people fleeing unsafe conditions is in no way a reasonable concern, yet MPs and the press talk about these masked thugs, preventing lives from being saved and swarming areas of key infrastructure, as having reasonable concerns. This is a shocking stain on this country.

Continued in next imageLetter continues: Migration is a net good for the country, even before you take into account the ageing workforce. The anti-migrant rhetoric comes from dangerous and violent men, and is spurred on by a press that thrives on outrage.

All human lives have equal value. Anyone preventing a lifeboat station - a lifeboat station! - from operating and saving human lives should be arrested and charged far more quickly than an elderly vicar sitting quietly and holding a sign.

I urge you to use your power as an MP to speak out on this. To call these balaclava-wearing men what they are: violent, masked thugs who speak only for a tiny, hateful minority. These are not reasonable concerns of patriots. These are the words and deeds of vicious people who want to fracture this country.

By way of reply, please confirm that you will raise this issue in parliament, and use your power to speak out against this disturbing rise of fascist violence.

Yours sincerely,

Guy Kelly

I don't think we disdain the center-right enough. First, they rode nativist populist tigers to power to get their tax cuts and deregulation; Then, they lost control of their own parties to those tigers; Now, they sit in lucrative jobs as columnists writing about how it's all the left's fault.

Farage’s basic message is that the country is fucked, that its immigrants’ fault and if we just get rid of them and take away everyone’s human rights and consumer protections to do so, then it’ll be great again. All cynically sponsored by foreign, crypto & fossil-fuel money. It’s a losers’ message.
To run on patriotism from the left is audacious, but there are successful precedents.
Mark Carney in Canada and Anthony Albanese in Australia did it, with some unwitting help from Donald Trump. Burnham is a more natural demagogue than either. He could stigmatise Reform as the plaything of Trump-smitten exiles and bitcoin bros whose first
loyalty is to their purses. It is crude stuff and might arouse primal emotions among voters, but he is not going to win the next election with a flutter of those eyelashes alone. "Love it or leave it," jingoes used to say to critics of their country. We love it, you left it, Burnham can say to at least a few Reform donors.

Burnham knew this would be the result of dropping his pledge to cap political donations, but he did it anyway. Labour are determined to midwife a Reform government, like plenty of other centrist parties before them whose weakness paved the way for right wing extremists.

It’s really good and important to have logical and realistic bans on Gen AI, I 100% support this, but attempting to limit or ban ‘super intelligent AI’ is not going to give the facts or realistic limits on what you want to ban / control that can be enacted in law and used to keep people safe.

Please read the AI con, follow or at least read some posts from @emilymbender.bsky.social and or @edzitron.com. Banning super intelligent AI is a bit like banning faster than light travel. Right now we need legislation to stop synthetic text extruders from receiving excessive funding and trust.

Google maps route that takes a baffling detour, presumably because Google Maps believes a part of the water of leith walkway is closed. Several stops have been used to attempt to force Google maps to not detour but non have worked.

There is a middle ground of going with kids, letting them make decisions and talking them through what those decisions led to. (My nibletts are either adults starting out or kids still getting there, but they have friends and go abroad on their own and have full lives. I’m hopeful we’ve done well)

I love stretchy fabrics, but some people find them harder. You don’t want to stretch them too much so if you are working on a machine it can be hard to keep them right. But hand sewing along a pinned line is pretty decent. Though you will have a longer lasting garment if you do a whip or catching st

There are loads of places to ‘rent’ or use sewing machines for your own projects, but hand sewing is perfectly viable as well. And ironing the lines you want to sew will make it easier on you.

Charlotte @spriteacus.bsky.social · 24/08/2026
Modifying existing clothes is a great way to figure out the basics, then using fabric that either has a bit of stretch, or is on the bias will give a lot of give so you don’t have to be super accurate. Also, safety pin your work on you, rather than normal pins cause they stab you when removing it

If you are open to some unsolicited advice, a great way to get a template for what you like / will fit you, is either an old school pattern or a garnet you don’t like the look of but like the fit. A stitch unpicker is best or just cut the seams off and allow extra for the hem when cutting out

What’s non viable about the deans bridge / orchard brae route? It’s more expensive and it inconveniences drivers, but if the goal is to expand public transport / active travel then that’s the fight, not active travel vs public transport.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/article... Keeping dedicated cycle, walking, and quiet accessible routes open isn’t the monstrous decision you are suggesting. It went to public consultation and was deeply unpopular, listening to constituents is probably something politicians want to do.

I mean, it’s a beloved, well used and safe walkway and cycle route. Having cars give up the space is a perfect valid option that isn’t being taken up. I’m not sure that’s nimby so much as ‘let’s not trash some fantastic active travel routes if we can help it’.
