"Many, many people are surprised to learn" this principally because it isn't true. Montesquieu is cited more times (11) in more essays (4) than Plutarch (3, 3). Heck, the Abbé de Mably is cited as often as Plutarch. And what do citations even tell us? Locke isn't cited at all...

If the task is to Write something, the goal indeed is to do the writing and thinking and produce a paper as a result. If the job is simply to "have a thing we can use" it's a very different ask. People must do the learning to know what good writing and thinking looks like, or we're just bots.

The Los Angeles Police Department's officer union said Tuesday it will oppose Measure FD, the half-cent sales tax measure on the Nov. 3 ballot pushed by the city firefighters' union - setting up a bitter and expensive clash between two of the city's most powerful unions.
The Police Protective League said it plans to spend several million dollars on broadcast and digital advertising as well as mailers to oppose Measure FD, which if approved by voters would direct hundreds of millions of dollars annually to the Fire Department to build new stations, hire firefighters and upgrade

The NYT is ok with extremist ideology as an anecdote in a profile—but highly allergic to any deeper examination of the ideology itself. No one gets to write an op-ed explaining any of this. That’s not allowed. But a billionaire can drop it in a quote as a passing comment.
