This is a fabulous question! And we didn’t spend much time on glia (sorry glial biologists), but yes, if our hypothesis holds, then these parallel progenitor streams could generate parallel populations of glia.

Hopefully this context helps - in this quote, Prof. Loh is referencing a common neural progenitor, aka the concept of a cell that is lineage restricted to the brain, but can generate all anatomical regions.

Thank you for reading and nicely summarizing! One little detail - we didn’t actually “trace” in any species other than mouse. We analyzed snapshot data from the other species you see to compare their profile to the mouse. Would be very excited to trace in more species for more details of brain dev!

Good 🧵 on recent fate mapping of mid-hindbrain boundaries using seperate lineage tracers, with authors concluding that we have two separately specified CNS regions. But we knew this for a couple decades now, and there is much more finessing of brain specification than simply “two brains”.

I graduated from the lab so can’t speak to all the ongoing collaborations - but we are active members of @isscr.org! While not a formal collaboration per se, some highly relevant work is also happening in the Kirkeby group in Europe and the Loh lab has definitely been in touch.

I won’t lie, it’s a bit overwhelming to see the work hyperbolized by many press outlets, including the university. We did not discover a new organ, or that you have two consciousnesses, etc! I’m excited for the general positive recognition, (especially the coverage from the Chronicle by Jack Lee)
