I don’t know anything about this but it does support my working theory that people really invested in higher calibers of weapons for self defense (rather than hunting) due to “stopping power” alone are bloodthirsty freaks. I am generally pro gun but think gun culture in America is deeply sick

like I’m sure it’s all done digitally now, like they took my fingerprints and ID and stuff, but it’s not something I’ve ever had to think about esp since I was waiting for clarity on this before buying any suppressors

I also don’t know anything about 4473 transfers because every time I’ve ever bought a gun I didn’t have to fill one out. I remember when I bought my first one the form was still in the box and I called the shop like “what’s this form” and they were like “I dunno don’t worry about it” lmao

I love all my mutuals but we are an ideologically diverse group united by “being real weird about at least one thing” and sometimes peoples’ things overlap or contradict

Also “silencers” don’t actually make the guns silent they just take them from 160dB+ (immediate permanent hearing damage, extremely painful) to 130dB or so (permanent hearing damage, less severe and immediate). In real life everyone in every action movie would have gone deaf by the opening credits

Right with SBRs the hell of it was you could just go buy a shorter barrel at the store and slap it on your rifle without registering it, you were technically committing a felony in doing so but if you were gonna go kill a bunch of people that probably didn’t bother you too much
020
Spooky Big Dad @spicybigdad.bsky.social · 1h
presumably it’s unverifiable that more violent crimes won’t be committed with SBRs or suppressed rifles, which is a valid point! like of course they’re not used in mass shootings because they’ve been prohibitively expensive and hard to get for like 70 years

Spooky Big Dad @spicybigdad.bsky.social · 1h
Yeah I was about to say “and if we see a sharp uptick in violent crime being committed with suppressed and/or short barreled rifles then clearly I will have been wrong here and I will feel like a real asshole.” The gun itself is already tracked at time of purchase in most states fwiw

Like if some psycho wants to go shoot up a school they can just walk into a store and buy an AR15, but they don’t get any additional “benefit” if it’s got a 12” barrel or a suppressor
020
Spooky Big Dad @spicybigdad.bsky.social · 1h
I think the issue is really that it didn’t have any influence on violent crime - there’s no reason to believe that short-barrel rifles or suppressed rifles are any more lethal or dangerous than those that aren’t

A “tax stamp” was a form you had to fill out where you registered the purchase with the ATF (subject to approval and a 30-90+ day wait) and also $200. This also applied to all suppressors/silencers and similar rules applied to shotguns

Ignore the Reddit ass annotations on this but this was the state of the law before 10/9, and also if you got any of this wrong you were committing a felony

So have Forbes, FT, fast company, Bloomberg, or the Wall Street journal started asking the pertinent question yet? (The pertinent question is, "if this is what character[.]ai's books looked like, what the fuck is going on inside anthropic and openAI?")

Guitarist considers himself “far middle” and wrote a song about being “just as sick of the left as he is of the right” and made a post comparing the left to Nazis after Charlie Kirk got shot. Vocalist did a song with Ronnie Radke last month. Bassist is just minding his business though
