Optimism is not and has never been a component of punk aesthetics. This is ahistorical nonsense perpetuated by theater kids desperate to feel cool.

The thing is that it's never suggested as a way to protest the decisions made by these companies, but rather it is brought up as a smarmy, defeatist sentiment of "well everything sucks now, might as well only play new shit". It always has an elitist "new bad old good" undertone to it.

Saw a few oomfs talk about it, and I agree with the take that it's weird as hell actually that the immediate reaction to bad news in the gaming space is just "play older games", as if the only reason to engage with older games is the state of the modern industry rather than the quality of old games.

Given the state of things, if you want to protect your own free expression and that of people you actually care about you are straight up gonna have to defend shit that deeply morally offends you, grosses you out, or even possibly induces trauma depending on your life experiences.

New games weren't scarce in the 90s, but you could've easily played most of the hits. Now there's so many masterpieces that everyone has their personal endless backlog of amazing content. AI slop shouldn't be able to thrive in a market bursting with so many human-made, genuine banger pieces of art.

Okay, so like, as someone who has played Capcom's Dungeons and Dragons beat em ups, Dragon's Crown, Fight n Rage, Double Dragon Gaiden, and Streets of Rage 4 including the Mr. X DLC, Absolum isn't as groundbreaking and revolutionary as many people talked it up to be, but it's every bit as stellar.

A gorgeous promo for the Super Famicom 1993 release of R-Type III: The Third Lightning. I love the mix of black lines and filled sections and the pale, almost eldritch teal. Goes so well with intricate ship artwork.
