There are a couple of kids in my nephews's class who weren't born in the US, and the class has decided (w/o teacher input) that if ICE shows up in they're all going to pretend not to speak English. 10yos reinventing "I am Spartacus" because they don't want their friends to get disappeared.

when i was a child, my family took CHIP and food stamps. this shaped my entire orientation toward government programs (positive) in a way most pundits don't have access to. and also, not to brag, but i think my siblings and i are proof that the ROI on feeding children is very high

My first dance on the national stage was predicting the giant Blue Wave of 2018 using negative partisanship. I was able to say, months and months before Election Day that 1. Ds would flip the House 2. End up with about 40 seats. They might outdo that in 2026.

@joshtpm.bsky.social has been right about this all along. Plus, when only one side is pushing, the reasonable takeaway: the other side is weak, especially for the vast majority of observers who are at most peripherally aware of what's happening.

By 2000, the government’s surplus was $300 billion, but private sector deficits had grown to $4.2 trillion and persisted for all but one of the next ten years, creating a fertile environment for sub-prime mortgages, leading inexorably to the Great Financial Crisis of 2008.

From 1993 to 1999, the government deficit was reduced from $7.3 trillion to $0.9 trillion. But the private sector plummeted from a $6.5 trillion surplus to a $1.5 trillion deficit.
