My little girl cat's meows sound either like a dinosaur sinking into the depths or a creaky door opening. I've never had a cat make such sounds and I've been enjoying them.

The maple at the entrance of a park has started turning very early this year.

Thank you, Jacqui! Felix gets so cranky if I pet him too much but it's just so hard not to.

The Museum of Fine Arts Houston has announced its acquisition of Tamara de Lempicka's 1923 painting "Her Sadness"! Until this year, the work had remained in the same family for 90 years.
A long, narrow painting of an unsmiling, white-skinned woman with straight red hair (cut off at about ear length) wearing dark clothing and a tan winter scarf, against an outdoor background with a leafless tree, and a tumble of buildings. She stands sideways such that the viewer sees one hand almost entirely within the pocket of the woman's skirt or pants. She turns toward the viewer so as to offer a 3/4 view of her face.

I'm so glad, Jules. I'm rooting for you guys that she pulls through. I grew up on a farm and a few of our cats were hit by cars. It's one of the hardest things. May she pull through and live to purr long.

oh no! Poor Billie! Poor little girl. I'm glad she's home with you now. Two weeks is a long time to be at the clinic. I hope she gets better fast.

Happy to oblige! This is from this morning: Dorothea is looking out the window and Felix is purring away. He always squeezes his eyes shut hard when he's very happy.

The dress was somewhere between the color of raspberry and strawberry sorbet and incredibly light, stripped of all the heaviness of the earlier periods. it looked so close to the 1920's but not yet there.

Thank you, David! I'm very curious to see what she'll look like when she's older. The dark markings will get darker and spread out more.

I saw the most dreamy George Doeuillet dress from the 1910's and I was not allowed to take a picture of it. This is still killing me a little bit inside.

That's been my experience in the past with cats too. She's an unusual one (the other one, Felix, makes up for it by running hot and cold. He was so sweet until his teeth started coming in, poor guy)

Since this is her teenagehood, I can't imagine how extremely calm she'll be as an adult! So serene. This is how I regularly find her. Just lying around!

I saw a great production over the weekend: Twelfth Night set to Duke Ellington’s music. The music from Play On! has been dancing through my head ever since. If I had the time, I’d go and see it again. If you’re in Chicago, I highly recommend it. chicago.suntimes.com/theater/2026...

And that’s the difference between the 1881 version and the later New York one: the earlier one is more witty, more reminiscent of Austen and in the later version (which he edited 30 years later. older and wiser now), much of that was edited out.

There’s something so curiously heartwarming about this book. Somehow cheerful? This paired with the great suffering, generational pain, and violence running throughout makes it very unusual. You did a great job translating throughout! Such great word choices/turns of phrases.

Unlike my girlfriends and others around me, however, my glasses—like books—never betrayed me. They always waited for me to return to their world when I opened up another book or took them off my nightstand; they waited for me to open my eyes again. Egana Djabbaraova, My Dreadful Body

ICE activity has been picking up again in Chicago A LOT. If you were previously involved with ICE watch efforts, now is a good time to reengage. I’m going to start wearing a whistle again.

Every day is a god, each day is a god, and holiness holds forth in time. I worship each god, I praise each day splintered down, splintered down and wrapped in time like a husk, a husk of many colors spreading, at dawn fast over the mountains split. Annie Dillard, Holy the Firm

Thank you to @newvesselpress.bsky.social for publishing my translation of Egana Djabbarova's My Dreadful Body. Our work together and the book itself mean a lot to me so it's especially gratifying to hear that My Dreadful Body made the National Book Award's longlist for Translated Literature!

They are doing well! They both like to join me when I read. Here they are both jamming themselves behind my book stand (it's holding My Dreadful Body-- utterly terrific read). The table for it is small so things can get a bit chaotic. That's Felix' hindquarters and Dot's face behind him. 🤭

hahahah i bet a lot of the audience was doing that on that day. La Traviata is coming here in the spring and I wonder if it's the same production as your upcoming one? I'm hoping for sumptuous.
