Screenshot programs, game mods, system cleaners, etc. Now its all stuff you have to compile or run in the terminal. It' so anti-user it drives me nuts. If linux had something equiv to visual basic or even agree on a common display server, none of this would be an issue. App images are just a bandaid

CLI is not an interface one should have to using for anything graphical imo. The death of easy to use gui making software really put a huge dent in how useful computers are now. Remember all those little bespoke programs from the winXP era for like games and utilities?

It is DEEPLY ironic that I pay for kagi, which is just a front end for google's search api iirc. I pay for it because ALL of the free alternatives SUCK. I can see that going away eventually too. We needed a better alternative years ago. There is some serious effort being put back into webrings.

Every cat we ever had just showed up one day and refused to leave. I don't think we ever paid anyone to have them, just the vet bills. My parents refused to let them live inside all the time and the predictable eventually happened. People are so careless, even for things they supposedly love.

I think one might run into 1st amendment issues banning it outright, but we could absolutely not allow it to be sold for money, or be used in any valuations. We don't want to set up a structure where independent research is shut out by charters and all that. Making the sale illegal should be enough.

you can already use existing laws to prosecute this kinda behavior. They've been around a long time. Computers do not "think" and are not alive. They are complex machines that work off initial instructions. All you need to do is hold the people giving it instructions accountable.

I think the more correct question is why are so many of these sites so easily hackable? The bar for security is in hell. I'm not all that surprised a super fast automated process was able to hack these places. Were the collection and sale of PII not legal, there'd be A LOT less incidents like this.

The last time I remember popular country that wasn't fake was the dixie chicks. They looked and sounded like the kinda women I grew up around. Real life beer joint, cowboy hat culture was almost dead by the time I was 10 or so. I literally grew up behind one and saw it die in real time.

remember when tv used to garner "controversy" for "upsetting social norms?" AKA, being honest about stuff? TV was a captured industry that was licensed by the gov, and kept afloat by ads. THAT is why it developed the reputation as the idiot box, and why GOOD tv was rare. It was by design.
