#cdoftheday 25/100. Albert Ayler Trio, ‘Spiritual Unity’ (1965) Free jazz. Had forgotten this was the first jazz recording for the ESP-Disk label. Not going to pretend I have a firm handle on everything that Ayler is doing here, but “Spirits” is stunningly beautiful.
‘Spiritual Unity’, 2005 CD reissue, pack shot:

- front cover of CD booklet inside the jewel case; the main cover image is an ink drawing of a naked(?) black man cradling a saxophone against a white background. The image is tilted at an angle of about 45 degrees from the vertical (or from the horizontal if you take the view the man is lying prone, on his side)

- compact disc: a large black letter Y on a white background. Per the back cover, the symbol “predates recorded history and represents the rising spirit of man”. Here it could also represent the three musicians on the record

#ClassicAlbumThursday Willis Alan Ramsey, s/t (1972) This was in Uncut’s 500 Greatest 70s Albums mag supplement (you know, one of those “Special” Editions that pollute the shelves of TG Jones country-wide). But it’s from the magic year, so I’m giving it a go…
Front cover of ‘Willis Alan Ramsey’. A portrait of the singer in grey shirt and dark waistcoat, possibly a cowboy hat too but the image is cropped at the top so hard to tell. There’s a slightly smug smile on his face. The surround is olive green.

#cdoftheday 24/100. C++, ‘Orienté Objet’ (2004) Another shelf of CDs in digipaks and card sleeves, and yet another pop album from the French underground. I’d moved back to London when this came out, but was still making work trips to Paris twice a year, so probably picked this up on one of those.
C++, ‘Orienté Objet’ (pack shot):

- rear and front covers of fold-out CD booklet. The front cover art is a stylised drawing/photomontage - in pink on white - of a woman’s head and bare shoulders sited on a small side table; three men pose standing or kneeling around the woman, pretending to apply makeup to her face but more conscious of the camera observing the scene

- CD lying in the middle panels of the gatefold digipak; together they form an image of what looks like the interior of a woman’s handbag. There’s various items of makeup, two russian dolls, sunglasses, a black notebook, a blister pack of tablets, scarf, phone-charger cable, etc. Lots of pink throughout the image again.

#cdoftheday #NowPlaying 23/100. Amancio D’Silva, ‘Konkan Dance’ (recorded 1974, released 2015) From a shelf that has Trunk label, TV soundtrack and library music CDs, inc a Dutton Vocalion section. Nice if unchallenging raga-flavoured jazz. Amancio’s group here includes Don Rendell and Stan Tracey
The previously unreleased 1974 album by Amancio D’Silva, ‘Konkan Dance’, issued on the Vocalion label in 2015:

- rear and front cover of the CD booklet (photos of Amancio, probably dating from the 60s, and a plug for other Brit jazz releases on the label)
- shiny silver CD 💿
- rear of jewel case showing the track list, likely personnel on the recordings, and other credits

#cdoftheday #NowPlaying 22/100. Etienne Charry, ‘aube radieuse / serpents en flammes’ (2001) Quirky pop from France released on Bertrand Burgalat’s Tricatel label. From the francophone pop and rap shelf, which has a LOT of Tricatel CDs on it. This one has improved with age, I reckon.
Pack shot for ‘aube radieuse / serpents en flammes’:

- cover of CD booklet (a collage of photos arranged to appear like a single shot, featuring a large, parked saloon car, three people in a street, a rotting tree, a verge of many pink tulips, etc);
- Compact Disc (featuring an image of a can of bug repellent spraying a pink substance) in its jewel case (lined in all white).

#cdoftheday #NowPlaying 21/100. A Guy Called Gerald, ‘Black Secret Technology’ (1995) From the drum’n’bass section on next shelf along. A CD I’ve played a fair bit in the past - the secret is hard to unlock - but it’s been a while. A bridge between where jungle came from and where it was heading.
‘Black Secret Technology’ by A Guy Called Gerald, CD edition released on his own Juice Box label.

Cover card (there is no booklet): a murky monochrome photo of a man in silhouette wearing a trucker hat, possibly performing in a club setting. There is a swirl of light above him, in the middle of which are superimposed a pair of logos: an elaborate purple letter G and a hand, palm facing forward and fingers outstretched as if to grasp something. The artist name sits across the middle of the image, in white text on a purple strip. The album title is picked out in purple, in a font that invokes advanced or alien science/technology, at the bottom of the image.

Rear of the jewel case: the two logos from the front cover reappear, but are now separated. The background is black. A track list, credits and a commentary by Gerald on the record and the meaning of its title are arranged using various white fonts.

#cdoftheday #NowPlaying 20/100. Busy Microbes, ‘Calling’ (2022) From the contemporary experimental and electronic shelf (a big percentage of what I buy new now, in various formats). A collaborative project between Nick Edwards (Ekoplekz) and Katie English (Isnaj Dui), this was their second album.
Busy Microbes, ‘Calling’.

CD released on the Woodford Halse label in 2022.

Front of gatefold card sleeve (mostly red and black with a die cut window, through which is peeking another card featuring an illustration in black, grey and red by David Yates (aka Dolly Dolly) of a one-eyed, eight-tentacled creature (a microbe?)

Compact Disc. White text and the label’s livery in red, all on a black background.

#cdoftheday (x2) 19/100. Ellen Allien, ‘Dust’ (2010) and ‘Lism’ (2013) From the nu disco, electrohouse & dance mix CD shelf, which also includes a section for Ellen. I guess we have to call this her “middle period”, just prior to dyeing her hair blonde & re-embracing all-bangers-all-the-time techno
CDs and front cover of the digipaks for the albums ‘Dust’ and ‘Lism’, by Ellen Allien. Both covers feature arty, monochrome head and shoulders photos of Ellen. In one, dust surrounds her head. In the other, she appears to be underwater.

A Certain Ratio, ‘The Joy of Sextet’ (1982, remixed by The Emperor Machine 2026) 🧵1/4. A twist on #ClassicAlbumThursday, a first listen to the new version of a classic LP I know very well indeed (in fact, one fifth of my answer to the recent bsky prompt: your top 5 albums on your 18th birthday)
Cover art for ‘The Joy Of Sextet’ by A Certain Ratio, itself a “remix” of the artwork for 1982’s ‘Sextet’, its painting of a sunset sky transformed into a 6x6 grid of coloured blocks, a kind of pixelated version of the original.

‘Soho Continental’ packshot:
- cover of the CD booklet: an Italian sports car coming into shot, behind it the Leaning Tower of Pisa
- inner liner tray image from the CD jewel case: a monochrome collage of film posters, LP covers and photos of chic women and dancers

#cdoftheday #NowPlaying 16/100. Leila, ‘Blood, Looms and Blooms' (2008) Big fan of Leila Arab’s debut full-length from 1998 but this, her third LP, has sat unloved on a shelf since I bought it (either on release or not long after). Let’s see how it stands now…
‘Blood, Looms and Blooms' pack shot:

- cover of the three panel digipak : a dense, abstract painting comprising crystal balls, organic matter, a climbing path, and twisted metal and glass that suggest test tubes and scientific instruments - all of which also contrives to spell out the album’s title

- inside panel of the digipak : a photo of an ornate wooden box containing test tubes, tube-cleaning brush, phials, spare bungs and litmus paper; a chemistry set in fact

- a compact disc with inter alia a track list and other credits

‘Liege & Lief’ (2002 remastered reissue):

- cover of CD booklet (cameo images of each of the 6 band members for this album, set below title and band name; all of this is framed by interwoven tendrils of plants arranged in a square shape, similar to an ornate picture frame; the cameos and frame are tinted purple);

- compact disc in its jewel case

#cdoftheday 13/100. The Glove, ‘Blue Sunshine’ (1983) Another from the ‘365 CDs’ project that I haven’t touched in the 20 years since. Unjustly in this instance; it’s much better than I remembered. I’m especially drawn to Jeanette Landray’s androgynous vocals. Interesting, layered production too.
1990 CD edition of ‘Blue Sunshine’ by The Glove, which includes three B-sides as bonus tracks.

Cover of CD booklet: a blue and purple swirl, reminiscent of The Time Tunnel from the TV show of the same name, out of or into which is streaming a collage of iconic 20th century cultural faces and objects, all led by a blue glove (index finger pointing the way). Overlaid onto all of that are colour saturated images of Steve Severin and ‘Laughing’ Bob Smith.

To the right of the booklet and partly obscured by it, a very shiny CD resting on its jewel case. The blue glove motif appears here too.

‘Plague Mass’ : cover of the CD booklet (an image of Diamanda performing live, holding a microphone, eyes like slits, teeth gritted, seemingly covered in blood, might just be the impression given by the red illumination); the CD in its jewel case, with the words ‘Give me sodomy or give me death’ scrawled on it.

Front cover of the ‘This Is One Girl’ LP. A photograph of four women posing in a sitting room in different outfits but I think they’re all Madeline Bell (it’s all one girl DYS). A fifth Madeline is inside the enlarged letter O of “One” in the album title.

#cdoftheday 11/100. Hot Chip, ‘Made In The Dark’ (2008) The one that has “Ready For The Floor” on it. Bought new at the time; might be only its second spin. The first two songs are in-your-face; tick VG. After that it settles into BAU then ends in romantic mood. There’s a bonus DVD of 5 live songs.
‘Made In The Dark’ by Hot Chip. Pack shot mimicking the layout of the three panel gatefold CD digipak, but partly overlaid by (left panel) the cover of the booklet and (middle panel) the slipcase. The right panel contains the bonus DVD. Each panel has a similar design: interlocking shapes and maze-like paths contained within a large circle. The colour scheme is either gold on light blue or silver on gold.

#cdoftheday 10/100. T. Rex, ‘Tanx’ (1973, deluxe CD reissue 2002) Onto a shelf of digipaks/card sleeved CDs. The single-free ‘Tanx’ was recorded knowing that the T. Rextasy bubble was about to burst. More listenable production, mellotron overdubs and gospel leanings, but mostly boilerplate Bolan.
‘Tanx’ - pack shot for the 2002 deluxe 2CD edition on Edsel (part of the Demon UK music group).

Front cover (black and white photo of Marc crouched down, posing suggestively behind a model tank with its barrel, shaped like the horn of a brass instrument, pointing upwards);
CDs, both featuring the classic silver on black Bolan image from the EMI era.

#cdoftheday #NowPlaying 9/100. Mariah Carey, ‘Caution’ (2018) From the modern R&B shelf (mostly women in R&B tbf). I’ve literally zero recollection of buying this; must have been in an HMV sale rack. Musically, it’s going down pretty smoothly so far, in contrast to the feisty lyrics.
‘Caution’ by Mariah Carey.

Cover of CD booklet (a photo of Mariah’s head, tinted blue for some reason, her long blue hair looking immaculate and windswept, against a pink background).

Jewel case, through which you can see the design on the in-tray card: a large neon pink letter M against a black background. There is a small sticker on the front of the jewel case: the album title in black ALL CAPS on a pink background.

‘Italo Funk Experience’ pack shot:

- cover of CD slipcase; a photo of a small Italian petrol station (actually just a few pumps lined against a wall) with two very small cars, presumably Fiats, parked in front. The album title is superimposed, with the word ‘FUNK’ spelled out in red, white and green stripes, matching the colours of the Italian flag 🇮🇹. Beneath the image is the legend “Synth funk, Italo-exploitation & espresso-jazz from Italy 1969-1980

#cdoftheday #NowPlaying 6/100. TBA, ‘Annulé’ (2005) Early electronic/dance album by Georgian composer-songwriter Natalie Beridze. A mix of instrumentals & songs (in English). Natalie mostly sings in a breathy monotone similar to Tricky. All good but I like the Nancarrow-esque “piano” pieces best.
‘Annulé’ by TBA.

Three panels from the fold-out CD booklet, including the front cover (a head and shoulders photo of the artist, standing against a concrete wall, wearing a black hoodie and face covering, so that only her eyes and eyebrows are visible; the word “ANNULÉ” is stamped in white over the photo). On other panels, a collage of various images and lyrics, printed in a Courier-like font, can be seen.

Jewel case. On the inside liner tray, a track list and credits are printed in all caps black text on a mostly grey background.

Pack shot for ‘Twenty Easy Listening Classics’ (part of Polydor’s “Easy Loungin’” series of compilations): front and back of the CD booklet (front cover has a photo of very smartly dressed groovy people, socialising, shot from above; back cover has a posed photo of Peter Thomas, at home, his hands on some sort of keyboard, arms crossed, also shot from above); CD; inside of jewel case with in-tray liner featuring a picture of a hip dude sitting in a futuristic orange chair, holding a cocktail, with the legend “Let’s lounge, baby!” to his right.

#ClassicAlbumThursday Pascal, ‘The Sixth Ear’ (1972) Brutalist home-recorded synth LP. Popped up on my Insta feed as part of one of those baity “5 [genre records] you must hear” posts. Up to four layers of Moog, lots of stereo panning, most tracks cut off suddenly. Unafraid to be atonal. Inspiring!
Front cover art for ‘The Sixth Ear’ by Nik Pascal Raicevic, as reproduced for the 2020 reissue on Wah Wah Records. An alien landscape of red rocks and white, vertical starfish-like shapes, viewed through some kind of tunnel or porthole. The surround is pitch black. Back cover of the LP ‘The Sixth Ear’ by Nik Pascal Raicevic, as reproduced for the 2020 reissue on Wah Wah Records. Illustrations (and typography) in white on a black background of - inter alia - some tarot cards, a crystal ball depicting an alien landscape, a censer and charts in an unknown language. #cdoftheday #NowPlaying 3/100. William Onyeabor, ‘World Psychedelic Classics 5: Who Is William Onyeabor?’ (compiled 2013) From a tiny Luaka Bop section on the bottom shelf. You know this one. Could’ve picked something more obscure but tbh I haven’t spun this comp enough. Tracks date from 1977-1983
‘Who Is William Onyeabor?’. Front cover of CD booklet (Head and shoulders painting of Onyeabor wearing a blue suit, white shirt, red striped tie and a white stetson, against a red background). Jewel case featuring the image from the inlay card (light blue on red silhouette of front cover image) and original transparent Luaka Bop hype sticker.

The Zenith "Space Commander" was the 1st TV remote control and used no batteries. Each button cocked and fired a hammer into 1 of 4 calibrated metal rods of different lengths which generated an ultrasonic tone like a tuning fork. The TV had a microphone to listen for it.
The Zenith Space Commander remote control showing the tall plastic buttons, and the front has a grill to let the sound escape.
