#cdoftheday #NowPlaying 35/100. Derrick May, ‘Innovator’ (Disc 2) (compiled 1998) What it says on the tin. I like the description in the booklet: a marriage “of European hard math and American future funk”. Disc 2 has the greatest hits, covering the years 1987 to 1998. Long overdue another play.
‘Innovator’ (2CD edition on R&S Records, licensed from Transmat Records). Cover of CD booklet (titles and artist aliases over the Transmat logo); disc 2 within the double width jewel case.

And it’s a Gooooo-orman (*crowd, moments ago celebrating, is suddenly quiet*). I’ll be happy if 3-3 progresses but my vote goes to Hotline - we could have done with more African disco in the tournament - and my bonus to Brenda & Her Noes

#cdoftheday 34/100. PJ Harvey, ‘Let England Shake’ (2010) Played this a lot on release. Been a while, but it still sounds good. The backing band’s role is crucial. The ‘state of the nation’ stuff is a tad overbearing albeit mitigated by the impression this is an anthology of songs rather than an LP
‘Let England Shake’:
- cover of CD booklet (an ink drawing / painting by Polly Jean of a large number of birds emerging from a dark central mass; the background is white)
- raar of CD jewel case (a colour photograph of Polly Jean’s head, the wind blowing her long dark hair to the right, so that it partly obscures her face)
- Compact Disc (two more drawings of birds, possibly details from the cover painting; white background).

hmmm, thanks but possibly the cover art / album source is misleading here? I think it is the original. Anyway, have added another version. They both sound the same to me though 🤷🏻‍♂️

Alpha Beta, “Space Invaders”/“Innocent” (1979) Spotted in the wild (darkest Carshalton) yesterday. Great sleeve. Decided not to buy - the songs were not quite up to snuff - but I may come to regret that. The synths are EXCELLENT. Not on streaming, but both sides on YT here: youtu.be/dTp5BXvmdSQ
A record sleeve and 7” single lying on a Paisley covered couch.

The record is “Space Invaders” by Alpha Beta, released on the Magnet label. It was their only single, apparently. The cover features two flying saucers 🛸 in the air above an isolated country road at night.

#cdoftheday #NowPlaying 33/100. Various, ‘Trojan Calypso Box Set, Disc 3: Calypso War In The UK’ (compiled 2002) From a small Trojan boxset section above the top shelf. Discs 1 & 2 cover JA mento recordings from the 60s/early 70s but Disc 3 jumps back to 50s UK recordings by the Windrush generation
Pack shot for the Trojan Calypso Box Set:
- front of the box: the Trojan Records logo in white on orange and two palm trees 🌴, all on a yellow background;
- three card cases that hold the CDs. The track list for each disc is printed on the cards in black text on a white background.

Anita should walk this, so voting ‘House Nation’ even tho I prefer the slightly sweetened ‘87 radio mix, the original is uncompromising in its brutalism (speaking of which, how the hell did we forget Nitro Deluxe? 🤦🏻) Miles backing track surprisingly similar to the original, I wasn’t expecting that.

#ClassicAlbumThursday Run DMC, ‘Raising Hell’ (1986) Straight outta the #BPHM8689 poll, tho’ not necessarily an indication of how I’ll vote today. Obviously tracks 1-4 are known quantities but let’s find out what the rest is like
Cover of ‘Raising Hell’. A grainy, monochrome photo of the rap duo, tinted purple for some reason. If that wasn’t enough, the artist name and album title are in a green font, placed vertically down the left hand side.

#cdoftheday 32/100. The B-52’s, ‘Dance This Mess Around: The Best of’ (compiled 1990) Cheap s/h buy a while ago in a final attempt to get what people see in this lot. Still trying, but😣. All very one-note, hate the vocals. They’ve one good song (“Future Generation”, and I already had that on a 12”)
Pack shot for ‘Dance This Mess Around: The Best of The B-52’s’:
- rear and front of CD booklet (a photo of the five members of the band, posing quirkily by a lake or something, illuminated by the sun - which must be low in the sky directly behind the camera - or maybe by strong artificial lighting; a blue lobster holding a flower in one if its claws, against a bright yellow background);
- a very bronzed CD in its jewel case. The CD still plays perfectly

#cdoftheday 31/100. Various, ‘Tunes From The Toons: The Best of Hanna-Barbera’ (compiled 1996) The covers have been a bit drab or dark of late, so here’s a colourful one. Colourful music too, with all your favourite H-B themes included - and some really nice suites of incidental music as well.
Front cover of CD booklet and rear of jewel case.

On the cover: Dick Dastardly, Muttley, Top Cat, Secret Squirrel (?), Scooby-Doo, Shaggy, Fred Flintstone and Yogi Bear.

A big BAIA vote for 5 Star (though judging by the vid it seems they wish they were American!). They passed me by at the time, with the notable exception of “The Slightest Touch” (which I love love love). Not even sure I’d heard this song before the poll. Decent group overall, Richie maybe weakest.

#cdoftheday #NowPlaying 30/100. Isaac Hayes, ‘The Man! The Ultimate Isaac Hayes 1969-1977’ (CD2) Ace Records (UK) 2CD compilation of Hayes’ recordings for the Enterprise label. Apart from the long version of “Joy” this has everything you want. CD2 includes e.g. “Shaft”, “Phoenix” and “Look Of Love”
‘The Ultimate Isaac Hayes’ pack shot:

- rear and front of 2CD set booklet (thumbnails of the LPs from which the tracks are compiled and various photos of Ike, both arranged in a 3x3 grid, but some squares are empty or contain text instead of photos);

- rear of jewel case (another photo of Ike, this one part of an archive poster/ trade ad promoting ‘The Isaac Hayes Movement’ LP; to the right of this image is the track list of this compilation in white all caps on a black background)

Some evenly matched tunes here. Voted for Pato - and on another day, Mai Tai could’ve got my vote - but “The Tragedy” is close to a GB. I love how militantly “Just Say No” hip hop was throughout the years covered in this tournament - and am now wondering idly how much of an effect these songs had…

Bah. It’s slow-moving post-rock, mostly as minimal as the artwork. Nothing much to excite. The throaty, droning, wordless vocals were kind of interesting, I guess. But they only popped up occasionally. Will probably move this one on.

#cdoftheday 29/100. Larsen, ‘Play’ (2004) From the CDs-in-oversized-packaging shelf. Another 365 Days project CD, unplayed since. Have no memory of what this sounds like. It’s an Italian four piece band + some guests, and apparently “Inspired by Ae”. I will play this after dinner and report back.
‘Play’ by Larsen. Front and back of oversized gatefold card slipcase, folded flat; insert; CD resting on another, normal sized card sleeve, which has thumbnail images of other releases on the same record label (Important Records).

The design scheme is minimalist to say the least; a few letters in black type on a mottled, light grey background. The CD is dark grey.

On the reasoning the albums that make you are ones you first heard aged 16 or under, this feels accurate
9 album covers:
Top Of The Pops, Vol. 34 (1973); The Railway Stories, Volume 4 (read by Johnny Morris); 10cc ‘Sheet Music’; Howells, ‘St. Paul’s Service’ and other church choral music; an Elton John “Greatest Hits” compilation from the mid 70s (a tape-only release for the petrol station market); Tubeway Army ‘Replicas’; Yes, ‘Going For The One’; the first commercial recording from 1969 of Berio’s ‘Sinfonia’ featuring The Swingle Singers; Talking Heads ‘Remain In Light’.

#cdoftheday 27/100. Ne-Yo, ‘Year Of The Gentleman’ (2008) From a shelf with CDs in those cases with rounded corners. Apparently it’s a ‘Super Jewel®️ BOX’. Surprised by the ‘promo only’ sticker; would’ve guessed I’d bought this new. “Closer” remains a top tier banger. Many hats worn on other tracks.
‘Year of the Gentleman’: CD jewel box opened out and laid flat, so the rear is on the left and front is on the right

Rear image: Ne-Yo in a dark trench coat, dark felt hat, dark suit and a grey shirt unbuttoned at the neck and a formal tie hanging loose under the collar, photographed walking in the street in daylight, like he’s just on his way home after an all-nighter at the club or something. To the right of this photo is the album track list and some credits. Below these is a bar code partly obscured by a small, round sticker saying “PROMO ONLY. NOT FOR SALE”

Front image: Ne-Yo looking very dandyish, photographed indoors wearing a light grey suit, white shirt, tie and a cream coloured felt hat with a dark band and a feather tucked into the band. He is holding the hat with both hands and has tilted it down so that almost covers his face. Or maybe he’s in the process of putting on the hat? The image is partly obscured by a rectangular sticker saying “The World’s Hottest Hit Maker Returns. Features #1 smash hit CLOSER, and MISS INDEPENDENT”

#cdoftheday #NowPlaying 26/100. Saint Etienne, ‘Good Humor’ (1998) The one recorded in Sweden with Swedish wunderkind producer Tore Johansson. For some reason, one of my lesser played SE albums. And track 10 sticks, I now find 🤬
‘Good Humor’ packshot:

- Front of CD slipcase: three monochrome photos of heads, one of each member of Saint Etienne, side by side. The photos are filtered to exaggerate the contrast between dark and light, and have a strong lime green tint

- centre spread photo from CD booklet; a presumably well known monochrome photo by Martin Parr of a seated brass band about to perform to an audience in a public park by a war memorial, while a young boy hides behind the corner of the memorial pointing a toy machine gun in the general direction of the band. The photo also has a slightly green tint

- the three inner panels of the gatefold digipak: there is a single large lime green letter on a white background on each panel. The letters are: ‘S’ ‘t.’ and ‘E’. The middle panel holds the CD.
