No real surprise that Your Love won the group but gutted that Adonis didn’t make it through in second place. Really thought it would be Adonis and Grace Jones battling it out for that second spot.

Someday is a song I’ve grown to love more and more over the years. I first knew bits of it from rave track Sweet Harmony by Liquid which sampled it extensively. I could listen to the piano riff on repeat for hours. Not even Acid Tracks which is also excellent could make me vote against it.

Shout out here to these 1988 albums that were two of the first House / Rap* compilations to make the UK charts, and which as a 13 year old was my introduction to House Nation and much more in this poll *fascinating that UK record labels decided to group the two together

Sweet Love is the finest soul song of the 80s bar none, and House Nation is a banger. But Darryl Pandy’s vocal on Love Can’t Turn Around is for me house music’s all time peak moment.

The moment where Love Can Turn Around kicks in is one of those moments where you can FEEL pop ratcheting up a level, putting its foot on the accelerator never to go back. Impossibly exciting and it wouldn't be possible without Darryl Pandy's extraordinary vocal performance

It’s been a week and still not over this. ”put something UK in… the great unpolled Mel & Kim… the best S/A/W single a year before they went to shit.” “It’s in!” “Not Janet or Gwen. Please.” “Oh right. Both.” Looking at some of the blokes-only 86 As, this group is a scandal.

Anita should walk this, so voting ‘House Nation’ even tho I prefer the slightly sweetened ‘87 radio mix, the original is uncompromising in its brutalism (speaking of which, how the hell did we forget Nitro Deluxe? 🤦🏻) Miles backing track surprisingly similar to the original, I wasn’t expecting that.

my vote is spoken for already, but i would have gone for sonny sharrock & co.'s skronk if colombian salsa brava wasn't on offer; the romantic post-punk and the south african smooth jazz end up too polite in different directions.

The second half of the '80s is rife with pop music that is very obviously influenced by Scritti Politti's '84/'85 singles and 'Who's Johnny' is a prime example. Had to vote Run DMC though, I think Green would agree.

it's the pastiche group, the americans doing freedom rock (lionel) and sock-it-to-me soul (prince), the brits doing jamaican (ub40) and midwestern u.s. (five star) sounds; at least all four of them come by it honestly. i think i like ub40's instrumental breakdown more than anything else here.
