I’m getting in late here, but @augetoffmygold.bsky.social nails it in this all-encompassing explainer of the “Choosin Texas” phenomenon. He covers all the angles I’ve been prattling on about in articles+podcasts since August & more besides. The analogy to Teddy Swims 2yrs ago is especially astute.

For 15 years, there is no one I have relied on or trusted more than my friend and brother Mikey Goodmark. The support he shows to everyone he touches represents what every human being should be. But Mikey is struggling. And we have reached the point where we need help getting him back to safety.

Another great Todd video and we really should have retrofit a name for the "Missing You"/"Broken Wings"-core mid-'80s pop genre by now. Yuppie Contemporary? Big Soft? Hair Ballads?

appreciate that the increasingly stale "Choosin' Texas" discussion on here seems to have been mostly supplanted by much fresher Liberty Biberty discourse

Those back-to-back Harper/Schwarber homers tie the total number of homers the Phillies had in the prior week btw

AUgetoffmygold @augetoffmygold.bsky.social · 30/09/2026

Would've bet the farm on Harper swinging so hard for that back-to-back homer his left arm would've ended up somewhere on the third-base line, never would've guessed he'd actually connect on it

In this podcast from last month @augetoffmygold.bsky.social postulated that Nelly Furtado's "Big Hoops (Bigger the Better)" is the worst lead single for an album ever. What are the main contenders for that title, do you think? (of songs I've covered, "Filthy," "Yummy" and "Eat You Alive" stand out)

When I was a kid the top 10 songs on the Hot 100 were read out weekly by the principal over the loudspeaker with morning announcements. Then they played the No. 1 song in full instead of the Pledge of Allegiance. And if you didn't stand up and sing along you were expelled for not being patriotic.

I can't even really judge Don Mattingly, if I was a baseball manager I'd also make decisions that I'd have to end up justifying like 70% of with "well it would've been cool if it'd worked"

Phillies end-of-regular-season reminding me a ton of 2022. Vibes are terrible, doomerism rampant, potential for collapse feels impossibly high. But ultimately they're not *that* bad and the team chasing them isn't *that* good and the odds are still well in their favor and they'll probably be fine.

Hardly shocked it didn't make NYT list but I do hope people know/remember that 'Flight of the Conchords' wasn't just a goofy fish-out-of-water musical comedy about two under-talented musicians but also one of the century's bleakest (and funniest) shows about urban loneliness and artistic futility

3363

AUgetoffmygold @augetoffmygold.bsky.social · 25/09/2026

Only things I can't wrap my head around with the NYT list are 'Chernobyl' at No. 19 (good Jared Harris monologue and all but... really?) and 'Party Down' not making it at all. Latter in particular, you'd think 'Party' would be the sort of show to over-index on an industry-voted list if anything.

It was easy to take this and hits like it for granted at the time, because they stuck around so long and you assumed radio would always be fully stocked with different versions of them. When they're basically gone from the top 40 landscape altogether you realize how much there is to miss about them.

Did this at karaoke last night and gained a new appreciation for how immaculate it really is. Unfolds really gradually, but moves sneakily well. Makes all the right choices: the bookending lyric, the fake ending. And those "thinking it over anyway" harmonies... man www.youtube.com/watch?v=A-oh...
