Google is only useful if you need the most superficial knowledge on a search term. If you need anything more in-depth, you have to wade through AI summaries and past a lot of not-very-relevant links. None of this is new, but this is me posting through enshittification in real time.

Trying to find a PDF of an older paper online. I tried google scholar first, and hit a complete wall. Tried a regular google search, and did not get anything that actually took me to the paper. Switched to Kagi, a newer, freemium search engine. Literally the first hit was *the* PDF I needed.
Search results for "A Physically Motivated Solution of the Alfven Problem", a 1970 paper by Jay Boris. Google's AI gives me a course in plasma physics that starts relevant, but then goes off into another direction.More goolge search results for the same paper. After the AI block, there are many links to related papers, but they only reference the paper I'm trying to find.Kagi search results for the same paper. The first entry is the actual paper as a PDF. The next items are links to government repositories that contain the original report. All of the results are directly relevant and useful.

A trend I've seen in scientific talks this past few months is speakers including an AI-generated diagram only to say, "This is AI, so don't blame ME if it's wrong! Tee-hee!*" Dude. It's YOUR talk. YOU are responsible for its accuracy. Don't offload your laziness to AI. *tee hee added for emphasis.

A Plan to Stop Solar Storms From Sending Us Back to the Stone Age

In a nutshell: It is possible to release a large amount of gas to act as a buffer between the Earth and an extreme space weather storm. It would act as a "storm wall" to break the tsunami of energy coming from the Sun and protect the power grid and more.

This is why we need continuity of measurements, overlap and redundancy of measurements across different locations! The answer has real world implications for how we run and train models and understand how storms arrive at Earth from the sun!

I'm not sure why this is- the two spacecraft are surely seeing different parts of the CME, but a 20x difference is humongous! There are degradation factors with ACE and inter-calibration efforts yet to come.

Shocking contrast between the solar wind density values observed by IMAP versus ACE- as much as 20 times higher in the new IMAP versus the very old ACE!!! We know ACE is getting old, but holy smokes that's a staggering difference.
NOAA's real time data feed from the ACE spacecraft. Density is shown in the center plot (orange dots) and never gets higher than 20 ions per cubic centimeter. The corresponding data from IMAP. Density (middle frame) reaches as high as 200 ions per cubic centimeter.

3) NASA wants to try to get science missions into space more quickly, but I don't know what this means yet. This is a goal expressed in multiple venues yet, but we're all still waiting to see how this transpires.

2) We are about to enter a new era in solar wind observations. IMAP's I-ALiRT data goes live next week (!!!) and the SOLAR-1 spacecraft is going live this spring. These are much needed resources for end users, aurora watches, and researchers!
