#AugustWorldbuilders Magic is granted solely by the will of the gods - whether for pact, praise, or pandemonium, it's up to a god's discretion, and they can grant whatever power they like within their domain. And if that seems unfair, well...someone would have to do something about those gods...

I don't get embarrassed very easily but it always feels a bit strange to submit to literary journals. It's like, "Hey I don't know you but here's all my baggage, I'm sending it to you directly, and also here's a poem about snails for some reason."

A little late, but - new poem published in CCSF's Forum magazine last month! It was great getting to read it live at the launch party last month too, so huge thanks to the Forum team for the opportunity and for selecting my piece!

Reading "A Swim in a Pond in the Rain" and this quote truly sums up genAI for me: "A plan is nice. With a plan, we get to stop thinking. We can just execute. But a conversation doesn't work that way, and neither does a work of art. Having an intention and then executing it does not make good art."

Ooo, fun question! The worldbuilding of the novel I'm working on was actually first inspired Spiritbox's "No Loss, No Love", especially this line: "I was born in an estuary destined to the sea. I was surrounded by pearls that I could not eat and diamonds that I could not drink." #pretendpanel

I adored the worldbuilding that Roseanne A. Brown did in A Song of Wraiths and Ruin + its sequel! So much rich history and lore about its world and how it became what it is, and really nicely tied in with the story. #sffchat

The cover for Uncanny Magazine Issue 62, “Mermay - Golden Hour" by Maxine Vee: In a forest of brown, orange, and golden leaves, a mermaid with orange/gold hair sits on a rock in a small light blue pond. She stares at her open palms, illuminated by a beam of sunlight. Purple flowers in shade lie scattered on the ground in the foreground. The quote reads: "The form is one page long. No back. Just a front. It should be longer. There are six copies of the form, all different colors. Like I’m working my way through the rainbow to the end where I’ll finally find peace. Red. A parent or guardian. I meet my mother for lunch at the little bistro down the street."

It's definitely important, but I think that's partly because a lot gets embedded into the choice of how a place is described, too. A long time ago in school, I remember a writing assignment where we had to describe the same room twice, but with different moods - a very informative exercise for sure!

Beautiful prose. Tragically accurate. “It does not matter, in practical terms, whether ICE’s actions are legal. In mafia states, legal is a malleable notion. What matters is that they are wrong. What matters is how they can be stopped.”

Free for all, I pretty much got as many of whatever books from the library as I wanted. My parents are immigrants who aren't big readers and especially not in English, so there was always a bit of an assumption on their part that they wouldn't really understand what I was reading anyway. #Bookvember

#pretendpanel No, I'm not, but it probably works fine for others. I only write when my characters play their movie story. And sometimes none of them play for days or week. I never force writing to fit any word counts, as I don't even count words until we reach the end of the story.

#WIPSnips Sept 24: "leave" From my godkilling short-story-turning-novel, "Blessed Be": Amity leaves home. #SFF #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts
I gave him a small, regretful smile and took a deep breath of the Verne's earthy-sweet air, filled again with the thick scent of wet loam and blooming grapes. Despite my bluster, this was the only home I'd ever known, and it was true that I might never see this place again. There was a part of me that didn't want to go, and his puppy-eyed appeal wasn't helping.

More importantly, I could feel the pull of the Root on my feet, selfish and sprawling through the ground. My ankles felt numb, their nerves frozen. Vedjra was waking up to my intentions, and she did not like for us to go too far away from her.

I had to leave, now. The Goddess wouldn't forgive me for going, but only if I managed to get away first. I wasn't willing to let her change my mind.
